The new equipment brings the Hönggerberg campus one step closer to efficient and environmentally friendly heating and cooling and helps to further reduce CO₂ emissions and the consumption of fossil fuels.

Work on the new computing centre on the Hönggerberg (HRZ) is progressing. The foundation stone was laid last Friday, marking the start of construction. ETH Zurich is thus taking a further step towards a modern and energy-efficient IT infrastructure.

The Institute of Molecular Plant Biology is getting a new laboratory on the Hönggerberg. Construction work began this week and should be completed in June 2025

Hannes Pichler has been Director of the Real Estate Management Department at ETH Zurich since 2023. This means that he is responsible for the timely provision of rooms and buildings at ETH. In this interview, he explains what the savings requirements in his department mean for teaching and research and how he came to ETH.

Construction work for the new computing centre on the Hönggerberg campus (HRZ) are set to begin in early 2024. Construction site setup and the preparatory work will begin today to ensure that work can start on time.

The new laboratory and research building in Basel has been awarded the "Iconic Awrad 2023" in the category "Innovative Architecture - Public / Culture / Education".

The new barrier-free forecourt of the Main Building will be fully available as of early 2024. Completion has been delayed due to an objection and the resulting late start of production in the quarry.

This morning, part of the courtyard around the Semper Observatory was closed off and a crane was set up to lift a telescope out of the dome. In late August, the original telescope from the founding year 1864 will be reassembled inside the observatory.

The Real Estate Management department is now offering workplace consulting for ETH Zurich. Three specialists in the field of New Work are available to advise on the future-oriented design of workplaces at ETH – including desk sharing.

The new BSS research building in Basel and the GLC in the centre of Zurich are now ready for occupation. The construction work took longer than planned, but the time has finally come: staff from the BSSE, HEST and ITET departments have begun to move in.

ETH Zurich is to rent additional space at Innovation Park Zurich as part of a phased plan, starting from this year. The move highlights Zurich’s role as an innovation hub and will strengthen research and collaboration with industry.

The area around the ETH main building is changing: a new university hospital, the FORUM UZH and a café will be built by the end of the decade. In addition, Rämistrasse and Gloriasstrasse will be completely redesigned, landscaped and traffic will be reorganised. In addition, ETH has initiated the final phase of its new building project GLC.

From 12 to 24 May 2023, the “Holdings of ETH Zurich Architectural Culture” exhibition will be on display in the main hall of the Main Building. In the free exhibition, visitors will be able to see some of the building components and furniture of ETH Zurich that are particularly worth protecting but that had to be removed from the university buildings due to construction work in the past.

The labs in the future HPQ physics building on the Hönggerberg campus will make possible the study of physical phenomena in smaller dimensions and at shorter timescales then ever before. Diggers will spend the next 14 months excavating a trench with a depth of 31 metres.

Following the renovation of the garage, parking spaces will be available again in early November. Anyone interested in renting a space can apply now. During the renovation, special consideration was given to bicycle users.  

Daniel Bucheli, Director of the Real Estate Management department, is leaving ETH Zurich at the end of October to pursue a career outside of the university. He will be succeeded in February 2023 by Hannes Pichler, the current head of Real Estate Management at Empa.

ETH Zurich and major bank UBS want to jointly promote an entrepreneurial mindset and boost interest in STEM subjects in schools. To this end, they are entering into a strategic partnership that is aimed to last at least ten years. Sabine Keller-Busse, President of UBS Switzerland, and ETH President Joël Mesot explain what drives the two institutions and what their plans are.

Preliminary work on the new physics building on the Hönggerberg campus commenced at the start of August. The surrounding community will be affected by construction emissions.

The GLC research and laboratory building in Gloriarank is not expected to open until the second half of 2023. Completion by the general contractor has been further delayed. The latest available information indicates that the D-HEST and D-ITET departments will be able to move in with their 13 professorships starting early 2023.  

The opening of the development and laboratory building on the Gloriarank (GLC) site has been delayed once again. According to the current planning status, the professorships will be able to start moving in from autumn 2022, and the building will open for the 2023 spring semester. Both teaching and research at ETH are affected significantly by the delay.

We’re getting closer to the start of a major construction project at ETH Zurich’s Hönggerberg campus: the HPQ physics building. The digging of the foundations is scheduled to get underway in summer 2022, but preparations for the new building will soon be visible.

ETH Zurich’s Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering has been operational in Basel since 2007. The move into the new building on the Schällemätteli site is a long-awaited step that will bring together all the department’s research groups under one roof and in close proximity to various important life sciences partners. Due to construction delays, the opening of the new building has been postponed to the second half of 2022.

As part of the Open House tours, ETH Zurich provides insights into its historical and modern buildings and guides visitors around its two campuses. 

ETH Zurich is evolving: the coming years will see not only the construction of new buildings, but also the transformation of interior space and office concepts. A townhall has been held to inform ETH members about architectural developments at ETH Zurich.

Over the past few months, ETH Zurich has been improving the historical area around the ETH observatory to make it a more attractive place to socialise and find peace and quiet. Other projects, such as the current redevelopment of the main building forecourt, will improve the overall quality of the exterior spaces in the university district.

Save the date: at 10 a.m. on 31 August 2021, Ulrich Weidmann, Vice President for Infrastructure, and representatives from the Real Estate Management department will provide information about the general structural development framework at ETH Zurich and grant insights into ongoing and upcoming major construction projects at various ETH locations.

A 245-tonne circular concrete chamber has been installed at the Hönggerberg campus. It serves as the housing of a large geotechnical centrifuge that is used to model earthquakes and their effects on soils and buildings.

Until 26 March 2020, an exhibition at the Campus Info on the Hönggerberg campus will show how the excellent anergy grid works.

The winners of the photo competition for ETH members "Favourite places on the Hönggerberg campus" have been selected: Nicolas Ochsner won with a photo of the archive room of the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta).  

ETH Zurich is working on the further development of its main locations – Zurich Zentrum and Zurich Hönggerberg. This will enable it to accommodate the expected increase in students and researchers and to create the space required to explore new areas of research and innovative teaching methods.

Several power outages will take place at the Hönggerberg campus because of a voltage conversion and a test of the mains power system.

An info room in the former anatomy building at University Hospital Zurich provides information on developments in Zurich’s central university district. There is also a poster exhibition in ETH’s main building that discusses what will happen to the urban space between the buildings.

On Monday evening, ETH Vice President Ulrich Weidmann, ETH Real Estate Director Daniel Bucheli and project delegate for the university district Peter Bodmer invited the local districts to a “Dialogue with ETH”. They discussed the state of the various plans in the central district and ETH Zurich’s current building and renovation projects.

Since yesterday, the new building information of the Public Real Estate Management department is available. It is a combination of three services related to locations, buildings and plans in a central and user-friendly offer/platform.

With Monday's ground-breaking ceremony in Lindau, Cantonal Councillor Markus Kägi, ETH Zurich President Lino Guzzella and University of Zurich Rector Michael Hengartner have commenced the construction work for the Agrovet-Strickhof education and research centre. Research on sustainable agriculture will be conducted at the centre from 2017.

ETH Zurich is constructing a new building for medical research – the GLC building – which will be ready by 2020. The artwork that currently stands between ETZ and the future GLC building will be preserved and integrated into the construction project.

The Federal Council is proposing a global credit of 173.4 million francs to Parliament for the ETH Domain’s 2016 construction programme. There will be no new large-scale projects next year.
