Round-the-clock catering

At the start of the semester, an “avec box” will open for business at the HIL building on the Hönggerberg campus. For two months, a shop format without checkouts will be tested that enables everyday products to be bought around the clock. Customers can pay via app.

The “avec box”, which can be seen here under construction, will open for business on the Hönggerberg campus at the start of the semester.

The new shopping facility, which is run by the company Valora, is a container building and was launched in spring 2019. It is now available for all ETH members and campus visitors to use from 17 September to 10 November. The only requirements are personal identification via app and the specification of a payment method. Staff will be on site during the day to help customers with the purchase process; at night and over the weekend, the business will run without staff.

A longstanding goal achieved

The range covers around 1,000 items: groceries, takeaway and snack food, and essential household products. There are deliveries twice a day. “I am delighted that we are now able to test out providing ETH members with a 24-hour shopping option,” says Marcel Zurbuchen, who is responsible for coordinating partner businesses at ETH. Almost ten years ago, ETH formulated the goal of providing catering on campus outside of normal opening hours. “Today, around 12,000 ETH members study and work on the Hönggerberg campus, and 900 students live here. They will be particularly interested in this offer,” says Zurbuchen.

A joint development work

The current project benefits from a collaboration launched in 2016 between ETH researchers and Valora on the topic of checkout-free shopping. Together with the research network Auto-ID Labs from ETH and the University of St. Gallen, which focuses on solutions in the area of the Internet of Things, Valora developed a first app that allowed customers to scan products themselves and pay using their selected credit card.
