The Canton and City of Zurich are working with the three institutions to plan the spatial and structural development of university medicine in the university district (known as the intergenerational Berthold project).

The project partners are providing regular updates on the developments in the university quarter through public events, websites, and newsletters. The latest edition of the Berthold Newsletter covers topics such as:

  • What significance do Berthold and the university district hold for ETH Zurich?
In a brief interview, ETH President Lino Guzzella explains why the joint development of university medicine will be beneficial to researchers and patients.
  • What is the current status of the structure plan for the Zurich city university district?
The Canton Council of Zurich has been working on the structure plan since June. The structure plan outlines the principles and guidelines for the structural development of university medicine.
  • What progress has been made with vacating residential buildings in the university district?
The vacation of residential buildings currently occupied by the three institutions is also outlined in the revised master plan. The Canton and the three institutions are committed to this and have already vacated and returned around 25 properties in the Canton’s ownership to residential status.
  • ETH Zurich, for its part, had also vacated and returned over 1,000 square metres of state-owned and rental property to residential status by 2010, and around 4,000 further square metres of property have been vacated and returned from 2010 to date.
