Simon Lilly is the new Head of the Department of Physics (D-PHYS). The Professor of Experimental Astrophysics takes over from Tilman Esslinger, Professor of Quantum Optics. In May, the Department Conference, the governing body of D-PHYS, bid farewell to Tilman Esslinger as head and thanked him for his service to the department.

Lino Guzzella, President of ETH Zurich, appointed Simon Lilly as Head of Department in March for the period from 1 August 2015 to 31 July 2017. Lilly's deputy is Manfred Sigrist, professor at the Institute for Theoretical Physics. The Head of the Department of Physics represents the department in its interactions with the Executive Board, other departments at ETH Zurich and the public.

The President of ETH Zurich appoints the Heads of Department and their deputies at the request of the Department Conference. All full and associate professors in the department may be considered for the post.
