The sun is set to go dark on Friday

You can watch the partial solar eclipse through a telescope on the Hönggerberg campus. Tune in to the SRF programme “Einstein” on the evening before to hear an expert from ETH Zurich explain the effects of this phenomenon.

People in Switzerland will be able to see a celestial spectacle this Friday morning between 9.20 and 11.45 a.m. – provided the weather cooperates, of course. The forecasts are good, but high fog could spoil the show for spectators.

In any case, the Swiss federal government is advising anyone who wants to watch the partial eclipse of the sun to go and buy a special pair of solar observation glasses from an optician, pharmacy or chemist. Aids such as darkened glass, sunglasses, film, CDs or optical instruments without a special filter should not be used – otherwise you will run the risk of causing lasting damage to your eyes.

If you would prefer to see the eclipse through a telescope, one place you can do so is on the Hönggerberg campus, where the astronomical society "Astronomische Gesellschaft Urania Zürich" will be observing the event through telescopes set up outdoors on Stefano-Franscini-Platz. Participation in this observation is free of charge.

At 9.00 p.m. on Thursday evening, the SRF programme “Einstein” will be focusing on the topic with expert information provided by Christian Schaffner from the Energy Science Center.
