Preventive maintenance alarm network ONA and OCT on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 1030-1530

Dear Sir or Madam,
On Wednesday, April 17, 2024, the regular preventive maintenance of the alarm network (alarmNet) for the ONA and OCT locations will take place.
The reception of alarms (fire alarms, medical alarms, technical alarms) on the pagers or radio calls via radio is guaranteed throughout the entire period, except for a few short local interruptions.
As part of the maintenance, the radio antenna for the outdoor area at the ONA site will be taken out of service for a maximum of 10 minutes between 13:30 and 15:30. During this time, it will not be possible to receive messages on the pagers or radio calls on the radios in the outdoor area and on the upper floors of the ONA and OCT buildings. The alarm center will forward alarms occurring during this time window directly to the building areas.

On the Spectrum Scale system (NAS22) at the Hönggerberg location, a software update of the backend storage systems is planed from 15.04.2024 at 9:00 am to 18.04.2024 8pm.

This action is part of a regular update. In principle, this update should be without interruptions for the NAS Service. All actions that could be critical for the availability of the NAS service will only be carried out after 8 pm.

On Thursday, April 18, 2024, there will be a power outage in the TAN building between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. as a result of a legally required electrical inspection.
The entire network is also affected by this interruption, including telephony and WLAN transmitters.

Software Upgrade on Core Router in OCT

On Friday, April 5, 2024 from 06:00 to 07:00, a software upgrade will be carried out on the core routers of the OCT building zone. The reason for the upgrade is an important bug fix.
Thanks to hardware redundancy, this should be possible largely without interruption. Only the editing stations in the Vlan service-id-mmu.oct.spec.2 will not have access to the NAS storage for approx. 20 minutes.

CAB D56 - Power interruption

There will be brief power outages in CAB D56 on the morning of March 19th.
The interruption will take place between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m.
Rows A, B and C are affected.
Additional fuses must also be installed in the electrical distribution for additional PDUs.
The electrical distribution is divided into two halves. Fuses with 200 numbers and fuses with 300 numbers.
First one area is switched off and after it is operational again the other area is switched off.
In order to avoid an interruption, it is important that all components are supplied by both areas.
I ask everyone who has components in operation in rows A, B or C to check them and adjust them if necessary.

There will be a brief power interruption between 08:00 and 09:00 next Tuesday, March 12.
Additional fuses must be installed in the electrical distribution system.
The UPS network will be interrupted first and then the normal network.

Rollout of the new Cisco Secure VPN Client from Wednesday 28.02.2024 at 8:00 a.m

An updated version of the Cisco Secure VPN Client (Version 5.1.1.42) is now available for the desktop operating systems Windows, MacOS and Linux. Please note that the client has been renamed by Cisco from "AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client" to just "Secure Client". The new version includes several bug fixes. Due to a router hardware lifecycle there will be a network outage in the zone LEE. The data centers in LEE are not affected. Upgrade of pia02 Print Server for employees at Hönggerberg, 9.10.2023, 04:00 to 09:00

On Monday, 9.10.2023, 04:00 to 09:00, an upgrade of the pia02 Print Server for employees at Hönggerberg to the new Windows Server 2022 will be processed. During the upgrade, printing at Hönggerberg will not work or only work with restrictions. The new server will have the same DNS name as the old server. Only the IP address will change. The RhB must replace the underground cable in Preda at the last overhead line mast EWB 1/RhB 64 before the HS-VK Preda. Renewal of RADIUS Certificate 06.09.2023

On Wednesday, September 6, 2023 the RADIUS certificate which allows a secure log on to the ETH network (802.1x) will be renewed. Users will be asked to trust it on their first connect. The domain used in the certificate is radius-service.ethz.ch, issued by DigiCert (instead of Sectigo/USERTrust as before)

Update base stations (transmitter) of the alerting network (alarmNet)

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, on Monday, July 10, 2023 from 1700-2200 the firmware of the base stations (transmitter) of the alerting network (alarmNet) will be upgraded to the latest software version. Receiving alarms (fire alarms, medical alarms, technical alarms) on the pagers or radio calls by radio will be restricted during the time window. During the update of the base station in the corresponding building area, no transmission is possible. After the update, the alarms are transmitted again as usual. Inter-site communication is not guaranteed again until the work has been completed. The base stations with radio antennas for the outdoor area will be processed at the beginning of the time window, so that the restriction in receiving messages on the pagers or radio calls on the radios in the outdoor area and the above-ground floors is as short as possible. During this time, no alarms are routed to the alarm control panel from the base stations in processing. The PSA (paging system) will be available during the entire time. Rollout of the new Cisco Secure VPN Client from Wednesday 5.7.2023 at 8:00 a.m

An updated version of the Cisco Secure VPN Client (Version 5.0.02075) is now available for the desktop operating systems Windows, MacOS and Linux. Please note that the client has been renamed by Cisco from "AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client" to just "Secure Client". The new version includes several bug fixes. The new images are available now in the IT-Shop (https://itshop.ethz.ch/). On Wednesday 5.7.2023 from 8:00 a.m we will force the upgrade through the VPN Gateway. Clients that connect to ETH via VPN after that time will receive the update automatically.

The two routers rou-bs-1 and rou-bs-2 have to be rebooted one after the other due to a configuration change. Date: Thursday 16 March from 06:15 to 07:30 Building BSA incl. the server room will be offline during the reboot for about 30 minutes, however. Except for the swi-bss-h20-5-a switch, the BSS should not be affected due to redundancy.

ANNOUNCEMENT: NAS22 redundancy increase of backend storage at HIT location from 24.02.2023 6 pm until 24.02.2023 8 pm

We found a broken cable connection on the Spectrum Scale system (NAS22) at the HIT location. This limits the technical redundancy of the storage system. Short network interruption in the server room LEE/A/206 (DCZ2) on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at 7:00 a.m

The replacement of the old top-of-rack switches (Fex'en) with VXLAN/EVPN ToR switches in the RZY/B/65 and HIT/D/13 is completed. Therefore, we have now built part of the new DCZ2 infrastructure in LEE/A/206 and connected it to the old DC Swtiches. In this activity, this new transition will now be activated so that traffic no longer needs to be routed through the old transition in LEE/A/309. This will cause a short network disruption of a few seconds for all servers in the LEE/A/206 room. Partial network interruption in the server room HIT/D/13 (DCZ1 and DCZ2) on Tue. 29.11.22 5:30 p.m

Due to a manufacturing defect, the DIMM memory modules on some data center switches in the HIT/D/13 room need to be replaced by a Field Engineer. This affects the following top-of-rack switches in DCZ1 and DCZ2 zones: swi-dcz1-111-hit-d13-v swi-dcz2-109-hit-d13-v swi-dcz2-111-hit-d13-u swi-dcz2-108-hit-d13-v swi-dcz1-112-hit-d13-u Date: Tuesday 29. November 2022 from 5:30pm to 10:00pm Each switch will be removed in the order listed and given to the Cisco Field Engineer, who will also be onsite at that time. He will then exchange the faulty DIMM modules. After that, the switches will be reinstalled and wired. Servers that are redundantly connected to a -u and -v switch (via LACP bonding or active/standby) will only lose the redundant path. Servers that are only single legged will be offline for approximately 60 minutes. Short network interruption in the server room HCI/C/255 (DCZ2) on Fri. 25.11.22 from 06:00 a.m. - 2nd attempt

Last week a rollback had to be done due to unexpected problems (Layer-2 Loop), therefore the re-announcement of this activity: In the server room HIT/D/13 all old top-of-rack switches (Fex'en) have been successfully replaced by VXLAN/EVPN ToR switches. In order for us to shut down the old network infrastructure in HIT/D/13, the transition between "old world" and "new world" must be moved from HIT to HCI/C/255. This will cause a short network interruption of a few seconds for all servers in the HCI/C/255 room. New date: Friday November 25, 2022 from 06:00 to 07:30 Vlans that are only in use in HCI/C/255 will be migrated in one go. For those, the interruption is expected at 06:00. We will migrate the gestrechten Vlans vlan-for-vlan, with these the short interruption within the mentioned time window is to be expected. On the remaining server areas and in particular also on the central infrastructure (ESXi, NAS, etc..) of the IT Services (DCZ1) this changeover has no impact.

Short interruption of various loadbalanced services as a result of HW migration on November 28th, 2022 at 7:00 a.m

The existing hardware network load balancers are end-of-life and need to be replaced. The successor models are already in production operation, some services like Sharepoint and Exchange have recently been successfully migrated to the new hardware. Short network interruption in the server room HCI/C/255 (DCZ2) on Thursday, November 17th, 2022 at 7:00 a.m

In the server room HIT/D/13 all old top-of-rack switches (Fex'en) have been successfully replaced with VXLAN/EVPN ToR switches. In order for us to shut down the old network infrastructure in HIT/D/13, the transition between "old world" and "new world" must be moved from HIT to HCI/C/255. Rollout of the new Cisco Secure VPN Client from Thursday, November 17th, 2022 at 8:00 a.m

An updated version of the Cisco Secure VPN Client (version 5.0.00556) is now available for the desktop operating systems Windows, MacOS and Linux. Please note that the client has been renamed by Cisco from "AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client" to just "Secure Client". The new version includes a slightly refreshed UI and several bug fixes. The new images are available now in the IT-Shop (https://itshop.ethz.ch/). On Thursday November 17, 2022 from 08:00 we will force the upgrade through the VPN Gateway. Clients that connect to ETH via VPN after that time will receive the update automatically.

Short exchange/mail archive/sharepoint interruption due to load balancer migration on 10/25/2022 7:00 a.m

The existing hardware network load balancers are end-of-life and must be replaced. The successor models are already installed in the two main communication rooms in the Zetrum and Hönggerberg ready for operation. The loadbalanced services from the VPZ "id-bd-wsm-test" (Exchange test environment) have already been successfully migrated to the new hardware last week. In this activity of October 25, 2022 at 07:00 the productive loadbalanced services from the VPZ "id-bd-wsm" shall migrate to the new HW. The config will be copied to the box before, so the actual migration will take only a few seconds. During this time the Exchange/Mailarch and Sharepoint services of the ID are not available. All TCP connections are interrupted and have to be re-established by the applications. It is difficult for us to estimate how well they will put this off and how quickly the connections will "recover".

Software upgrade to firewall/VPN cluster phase 2 on 09/29/2022 06:00-07:30

The firewall and remote access VPN infrastructure of ETH needs to be updated. The reason for this are various, partly security relevant bug fixes. The entire upgrade runs in 3 separate phases. In this second phase from Thursday, September 29, 2022 from 06:00 to 07:30 the chassis at the Hönggerberg should be updated. All traffic will be diverted via City during this process. Subsequently, the software will be upgraded on a firewall service module pair (City and Höngg). The upgrade should non disruptive due to hardware redundancy. However, it is still possible that individual UDP/TCP sessions are not taken over cleanly. Therefore, short interruptions are possible for Inter-VPZ connections and connections to the Internet.

SW upgrade on 400G "Superspine" router datacenter zone 2 (DCZ2) on Tue. 12.7.2022 06-30-07:30

Due to various bugs, we need to update and patch the 400Gbps "Superspine" routers from Datacenter Zone 2 (DCZ2). Date: July 12, 2022 from 06:30 to 07:30 We will first logically isolate both routers in the LEE and HPP from the network and reroute traffic through the redundant nodes in the HCI and HG. Once these are upgraded and back "in-service", the redundant two routers in the HCI and HG will be isolated and upgraded. So this activity should have no impact on the ongoing operation.

Software Upgrade on building zone router in HCI on Mo. 20.6.2022 06:30-07:30 Uhr

On Monday June 20, 2022 from 06:30 to 07:30, we will upgrade the core routers from the building zone HCI. The reason for the upgrade is an important bug fix that improves the management of the Mac address table, which should improve network stability throughout the building zone. Thanks to hardware redundancy, this in non-disruptive and should not affect operations.

From the redundant switch pairs the -v switch will be upgraded. To install the new SW all -v switches must be rebooted. For redundant connected servers no network interruption is expected. This affects only the server infrastructure of the departments, the ID infrastructure is located in the DCZ1 zone and is not affected.

Power/network interruption Tuesday and Wednesday June 14/15, 2022 on the FEL area and in 8315 Lindau / Eschikon

On Tuesday and Wednesday, June 14th and 15th, 2022, EW Lindau will carry out renovation work on the old transformer station. The supply lines to the FGP, FMG and FST buildings must therefore be relocated to a temporary line. This ensures a power interruption of a maximum of 3 hours per cable. ANNOUNCEMENT: NAS22 maintenance at HIT location on 17.06.2022 ab 8 p.m. until midnight

Dear NAS22 customers On the Spectrum Scale system (NAS22) at the HIT location, we plan to commission new Cluster Export Servers (CES) from June 17, 2022 from 8:00 p.m. to midnight, which will provide the access logs. This action is part of a regular hardware update. This will require a change in the endianness of the CES nodes, which will lead to service interruptions. Power/network interruption in the building HG & MM from Whitsun weekend 04.06.2022 - 06.06.2022

During the Pentecost weekend of June 4th, 2022 – June 6th, 2022 (Sat., Sun., Mon.), the statutory, periodic inspection of the electrical installations in the main building and MM will be carried out. During this work, there are frequent short power cuts in the buildings during the day. The buildings are closed during this time. The network of the storey switches, including telephony and WLAN transmitters, is also affected by these power failures.

Integral security tests / data network interruption Wednesday 08.06.2022 approx. 5:30 a.m. - approx. 12:00 p.m. in the LEE building

On Wednesday, June 8, 2022, between 5:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., an integral test will take place in the LEE building. The total power cut will take place between 06:30 and 08:00. Rooms/server rooms: LEE A101,A105,A108,A206 and A309 The rooms/server rooms are then only operated via the UPS/battery systems and no interruptions should be expected. Excluded are all devices that are not UPS supported. This results in a data network interruption. Floor switches: The entire network of floor switches, including telephony and WLAN transmitters, is also affected by this interruption between 6:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.

SW Upgrade on MPLS hub-nodes rou-ref-hg and rou-ref-hpp 20.05.2022 06:30-07:30

On Friday May 20, 2022 from 06:30 to 07:30 we will upgrade the SW on the MPLS hub nodes "rou-ref-hg" and "rou-ref-hpp". Reason for the upgrade are various bug fixes and new features. Thanks to hardware redundancy (traffic is re-routed via the LEE and HCI) this should be without service interruption and should not affect operations.
