Prestigious OSCM Distinguished Scholar Award bestowed on Stephan Wagner

Stephan Wagner, Professor for Logistics Management at D-MTEC, has received one of the highest recognitions for empirical researchers in the field of operations and supply chain management: the Academy of Management OSCM Distinguished Scholar Award.

Each year, the external pageOSCM Division of the external pageAcademy of Management bestows a external pageDistinguished Scholar Award on a leading global scholar. The award honors excellence in the field of operations and supply chain management scholarship which has helped to shape both the field’s body of knowledge and its practice. It also recognises a commitment to serve the operations and supply chain field, both as a whole and within the Academy of Management.

The OSCM division promotes research on broad and essential problems, with a focus on cross-disciplinary empirical research. The Distinguished Scholar Award offers an opportunity to highlight, define and honour scholars who bring this focus to their work.

At this year's annual meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, Professor Wagner’s commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration was evident in his participation on the All-Academy panel on Blockchain Research in Management. Furthermore, he served as a mentor at the OSCM Division Junior Faculty and Doctoral Consortium.

In his remarks on the award, external pageProfessor Lutz Kaufmann emphasised Professor Wagner’s groundbreaking research at the intersection of entrepreneurship and operations management, on supplier innovation, and on digital technologies in logistics and supply chain – and, of course, his pioneering work on risk and disruption. As just one indication of his remarkable impact, Professor Lutz noted that his work has been cited close to 20,000 times, according to Google Scholar. Furthermore, he noted that Professor Wagner’s excellence in research has been consistently recognised through numerous best-paper, conference, and other research awards. Finally, he praised Professor Wagner’s commitment to leveraging his expertise for the betterment of society – evident in his role as the Founder and Director of the HumOSCM Lab at ETH Zurich. Professor Kaufmann concluded his speech by stating, “Stephan undoubtedly belongs in the illustrious ‘hall of fame’ of our most exceptional colleagues.”

About the award winner

Stephan Wagner holds the chair of Logistics Management at the Department of Management, Technology, and Economics (D-MTEC) and is Faculty Director of the HumOSCM Lab at ETH Zurich. His research focuses on supply chain management, purchasing and supply management, and logistics and transportation management, particularly on strategy, networks and relationships, risk, innovation, digitalisation, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and humanitarian operations. Professor Wagner has served on various boards and committees at the Academy of Management, the Production and Operations Management Society, and the Decision Sciences Institute. He is the author and editor of 13 books and 150 chapters and articles. His research has been published in numerous management, operations management, methods, and managerial journals.
