The latest honours and prizes

Victor Mougel, Professor at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences of ETH Zurich, has been awarded the Ruzicka Prize 2023 for his pioneering work on redox properties and catalytic applications of synthetic Iron-Sulfur Clusters.

Dr. Tomas Fiala, postdoc at the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry (D-CHAB) receives the prestigious Branco Weiss Fellowship in 2023, awarded by ETH Zurich to outstanding postdocs.

The Ernst Schering Foundation honors Gisbert Schneider with the Ernst Schering Prize 2022 for his pioneering work in the field of AI-​assisted drug discovery. Through his research, Gisbert Schneider enabled the transfer of this new approach to industrial application. As a result, potential active substances are now identified more quickly worldwide and examined for potential side effects.

The Sustainable Methanol team wins the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Environment, Sustainability and Energy Division Horizon Prize, the John Jeyes Award 2022. The team is based at ETH Zürich, TotalEnergies, Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia and Paul Scherrer Institute. It won the prize for the discovery, understanding, and technical development of a novel catalytic technology for the recycling of carbon dioxide to produce sustainable methanol.

The German Chemical Society (GDCh) awards Gisbert Schneider (D-CHAB) the Gmelin-Beilstein commemorative coin for his pioneering work for the integration of machine-learning methods into practical medicinal chemistry.

Jean-Christophe Leroux receives the Maurice-​Marie Janot Award 2022 for his groundbreaking contributions to the field of Pharmaceutics, Biopharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology. 

Lignin is one of the most common organic compounds in the world. What if this complex substance could be easily converted into sustainable fuel? Patrick Hemberger, scientist at the synchrotron of the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen, was the first to find an efficient way to investigate this process in detail. For his work on reactive intermediates in heterogeneous catalysis, he has been awarded the 2020 Ruzicka Prize.

Ruth Signorell is awarded the Mildred Dresselhaus Senior Award 2019 of the Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging (CUI). The prize is also linked to the Mildred Dresselhaus Guest Professorship at CUI.

The 2018 Scientific Challenge by Air Liquide aimed at improving air quality and preventing global warming for the planet. Christophe Copéret receives the A​ir Liquide Scientific Prize.

The EU has recognised Michela Puddu, co-founder of ETH spin-off Haelixa, as a successful female innovator. She developed and now markets an innovative DNA-based tracers.

Cristina Müller, Senior Scientist at the Center for Radiopharmaceutical Sciences, received this year’s Marie Curie Award for her research on Terbium-161 based therapy of prostate cancer, presented at the 31st Annual Conference of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM).

Sereina Riniker receives the Latsis Prize 2018 of ETH Zurich for her groundbreaking contributions to the methodological development and applications of molecular dynamics simulations.

Jeffrey W. Bode, Professor of Organic Chemistry (D-CHAB), receives the Mukaiyama Award 2018 for his outstanding achievements in the field of Synthetic Organic Chemistry. The prize is awarded by the Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan.

Dieter Seebach, Professor of Organic Chemistry (D-CHAB), receives the Arthur C. Cope Award 2019 for his outstanding achievements in the field of Organic Chemistry. This is one of the American Chemical Society's most prestigious awards for Organic Chemistry.
