The Football World Cup in Brazil. For many fans, that means a state of high alert. In the bar, in their own living room or with friends in the garden – they’ll all be joining in the excitement. Preferably with a barbecued sausage in one hand and a chilled beer in the other.

The first match, in São Paulo, is between the host country, Brazil, and Croatia. The Swiss team goes into action for the first time on Sunday 15 June, playing against Ecuador.

Betting on the World Cup

To make the whole event even more exciting, ETH Zurich has launched its own World Cup betting game. Members of ETH can place bets on the Intranet on how any of the 64 matches will turn out and which country will win the final on 13 July.

Anyone wishing to join in the fun can simply register for the betting game and have a go at guessing the exact result of the matches. You can also bet on bonus questions such as «Which team will have the player who scores the most goals?» and «Who will be the group winner?» The winner of the betting game will receive an iPad Air and a trophy. Those coming from second to tenth will win ETH hoodies and ETH T-shirts. For those who come eleventh to twentieth, there’ll be an ETH Caran d’Ache ballpoint pen.

Public viewing and BBQ at the bQm

You can watch the matches live and find out whether you were lucky with your bet at the bQm on the Polyterrasse on the ETH Zentrum campus or in the Alumni Lounge on the Hönggerberg campus.

For the duration of the World Cup, the ASVZ (Academic Sports Association Zurich) will be transforming the bQm into a lively external pageSports Café. All the World Cup matches kicking off before midnight will be shown live on big screens – starting from 4 p.m. at the weekends. From 5 p.m. on Mondays to Fridays, there’ll be a special World Cup lounge open at the bQm, with a barbecue. Football fans can also bet on which team will get the first yellow card or which player will score the next goal. And anyone who doesn’t want just to watch other people playing, but likes to take part themselves, can try out their skills on the «mini-mini pitch». Table football will also be available.

Watch the World Cup in the summer garden

The World Cup matches will also be shown on the ETH Hönggerberg campus. The Alumni Lounge will be showing the main matches in its summer garden. Public viewing in the Alumni Lounge will normally only be available during the week. However, an exception will be made for the final and for other critical matches in the World Cup.
