Running, lifting weights, working up a real sweat: members of both ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich have given their all over the past week. Yet there can only be one winner. With ETH Zurich’s representatives clocking up 18,156 hours of sporting endeavour by the end of the week-long duel, their counterparts from the University of Zurich simply could not keep up, recording just 16,633 hours of activity.

ETH Zurich took a commanding lead right from the very first day of the duel on Sunday, 4 May and maintained its advantage throughout the seven-day contest. Despite being hot on the heels of ETH at times, the University of Zurich could not catch up.

The result means that, as the losing party, the University of Zurich has to pay for the installation of a new, third training gym at the Fluntern university sports centre. This gym is being set up primarily for people to engage in functional training using their own body weight or with free weights. Construction is already underway and the facility is due to be opened towards the end of the semester.

Discount on ASVZ membership

The wager between the two universities came about as part of the Academic Sports Association Zurich’s (ASVZ) 75th anniversary celebrations. The celebratory activities are coming thick and fast: as of Monday, following straight on from the duel, ASVZ’s membership subscriptions are being reduced by 75 Swiss francs for a period of 75 days. The annual membership for employees will therefore cost 105 francs instead of 180 during this time.

This offer applies to employees of ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich and the Universities of Applied Sciences Zurich as well as to alumni from any of the universities who have never had an ASVZ membership or have not had an ASVZ membership since at least 12 May 2011.
