Information about the coronavirus

ETH members are advised to take various precautionary measures with regard to the coronavirus.

There has been a sharp rise in cases of pneumonia caused by a novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), identified as originating from the central Chinese city of Wuhan. The virus can be transmitted from person to person, and the severity of the disease varies. The pathogen has now spread across China, and recently cases have also been confirmed in several European countries.

Anyone experiencing fever and breathing difficulties after a stay in China should contact a doctor immediately, mentioning their trip abroad.

ETH members planning to travel to China are advised to postpone their trip where possible. ETH members returning from China to Switzerland, or those coming to work or study at the university for the first time, should initially arrange to work from home for seven days. As long as they remain symptom free, they can then return to work or study as usual at ETH. Information to students on the current exam session will soon be sent directly to those concerned.

ETH members are generally advised to take the following precautions for coping with the current flu outbreak:

  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Observe strict hygiene when coughing or sneezing – cover your mouth or nose with the crook of your arm, use tissues and dispose of them carefully as soon as possible
  • Avoid close contact with anyone suffering from flu
  • Anyone feeling unwell, such as a fever or any other flu symptoms, should stay at home.

In case of questions or uncertainties, Leonhard Sigel, MD, Safety, Security, Health and Environment (SSHE), Occupational Medicine and Health Protection Section, is available to ETH members at .
