AVETH elects a new president

Arik Jung is the new president of AVETH. On Wednesday, members of the scientific staff association chose the physics doctoral student to succeed Florian Thöle.

Arik Jung is the new president of the Academic Association of Scientific Staff at ETH Zurich (AVETH). AVETH members convened on the evening of Wednesday, 2 March 2016, at Hönggerberg, where they voted on the successor to Florian Thöle.

Arik Jung is a doctoral student in the Laboratory for Solid State Physics (D-PHYS) and is the former treasurer of AVETH. In front of AVETH members, he expressed his intention to continue the good work done in recent years and maintain the excellent relationship with specialist associations and other university groups. He also commented that AVETH can make ETH an even better workplace.

His predecessor, Florian Thöle, was thanked for his hard work and dedication. He will now focus on his doctoral thesis in the Department of Materials (D-MATL).

AVETH members also elected the following board positions:

  • Emanuela Milani, D-BIOL, Vice President
  • Sascha Winterberg, D-ERDW, Treasurer
  • Liu Yu, D-USYS, President Telejob
  • Rebekka Stark, D-BIOL, re-elected as Treasurer Telejob
  • Heads of the following work groups were elected:
  • Policy: Isabella Schalko, D-BAUG (incumbent)
  • Events: Stefano Duca, D-GESS (incumbent)
  • Post-docs: Christina Mueller, D-BIOL
  • Advisory Services: Nina Ripin, D-BIOL
  • Communications: Anna Vagstad, D-BIOL

AVETH members also noted, inter alia, that the scientific staff association

  • was working efficiently with the new organisational structure introduced in 2015;
  • the emphasis placed on the issue of promotion of young talent, career development, terms of employment and job references for scientific staff at ETH Zurich;
  • an expansion of its own offers – and advisory services for scientific staff. In addition, AVETH supports the establishment of an advisory service of the association of doctoral students, post-docs and scientific employees of the University of Zürich (VAUZ).
  • the development of a new, mobile website www.aveth.ethz.ch.
