The figures for 2006 show a sharp increase in irregular migration movements. Compared to 2005, the numbers have doubled. Over 17,000 African migrants have arrived in Spain. More than 12,000 Africans have attempted to cross the ocean to the Italian island of Sicily. Europe now matches North America in its significance as a region of immigration.
