Student Mobility for Traineeship (SMT)

Main content

Traineeships in Europe (outside Switzerland) may be conducted in the framework of the SMT Swiss-European Mobility Programme.

Application deadline

  • 2 months before the stay begins; applications on shorter notice may not be processed in time for the planned start of your stay
  • at the latest until 15 February for the current academic year

Applications after 15 February for a mobility in the current academic year are possible, see application.

Scholarships are awarded in the order in which the (complete!) applications were received. The Student Exchange Office can inform you about the availability of scholarships.

Conditions for participating

An SMT exchange may last 2 to 12 months within Europe (outside of Switzerland).

The internship or project must be part of your studies.

Students doing their internship within the Climate-KIC label cannot apply via SEMP SMT. Beside the scholarship of the Climate-KIC no other grant is possible.

Traineeships found and supervised by other organisations (e. g. IAESTE) cannot receive additional support from SEMP SMT.

Partner organisations

The traineeship/project is organised independently by the student, who may choose the host organisation (a company, research institute or in exceptional cases a university) freely. The host organisation must be located in one of the Erasmus+ programme countries.

If you wish to do a traineeship/project at a partner university, contact the Student Exchange Office well ahead of time to enquire whether you can be nominated there as an exchange student as this has many advantages.

Scholarships

For the scholarship no special application is required.

After your application has been processed you will receive a scholarship offer, provided enough funds are still available.

Scholarships are awarded in the order in which the (complete!) applications were received. The Student Exchange Office can inform you about the availability of scholarships.

Here you will find the information on scholarships (PDF, 192 KB).

If you are a recipient of cantonal, federal or ETH funding you may also apply to the ETH Zurich Financial Aid Office for coverage of travel expenses.

Language requirements

The host organisation (company or university) rightfully expects students to understand and use its everyday and working languages. No language tests are required, simply the personal responsibility of the student in this matter.

Important notes

SMT is not an actual exchange programme based on a bilateral agreement. Please check directly with your host institution about the status you will receive, the conditions and required documents.

If the internship is compulsory and you are dependent on the recognition of its credits, make an appointment with your Departmental Internship Coordinator to discuss the matter.

Note on University College London (UCL):
If you intend to conduct research work you must contact the respective department and apply for ‘visitor’ status at UCL.

Application

The application deadline for SMT is at least 2 months before the traineeship begins and at the latest until 15 February for the current academic year. Applications on shorter notice may not be processed in time for the planned start of your stay.

Applications after 15 February for a mobility in the current academic year are possible, but ETH Zurich must apply for additional scholarships with Movetia, which administrates the SEMP funding for all Swiss higher education institutions and availability of funding can therefore not be guaranteed.

Please see the instructions for applying online (PDF, 196 KB).

Read these instructions carefully!

ETH Zurich reserves the right to exclude students from future student mobility programmes if they withdraw from a planned mobility without sufficient grounds for doing so (examination failure, illness, accident).
