New Head of the Administrative Department Educational Development and Technology

Dr. Gerd Kortemeyer is the new head of the Administrative Department Educational Development and Technology (LET). He takes over from Dr. Daniel Halter, who is moving to the University of Applied Sciences, Northwestern Switzerland.

Gerd Kortemeyer, Ph.D., studied physics at the University of Hanover and received his Ph.D. in theoretical nuclear physics from Michigan State University in 1997. For the following 14 years, he was Director for the Laboratory for Instructional Technology in Education in the Division of Science and Mathematics Education. Among other projects, he launched the LON-CAPA platform, which provides online educational content and assessment resources in STEM disciplines. He continued this work when in 2004 he became an Adjunct Professor of Physics and Assistant Professor of Physics Education at Lyman-Briggs College, Michigan State University. In 2011, Dr. Kortemeyer was promoted to Associate Professor of Physics Education at the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

He will take office on 1 February 2019.

For her part, Rector Sarah Springman is delighted to be able to appoint Dr. Gerd Kortemeyer to this important post. She says "Dr Kortemeyer is a proven expert who will both consolidate and expand ETH Zurich's outstanding position in the fields of curriculum development and teaching technology, which has been advanced, for example in enabling novel and authentic online examinations, under the leadership of Dr. Daniel Halter and members of the LET Team".

Dr. Daniel Halter has been appointed Vice President for University Development at the University of Applied Sciences, Northwestern Switzerland, and starts on 28th December 2018. Dr Benno Volk will head the LET department on an interim basis in January 2019.

The administrative department Educational Development and Technology (LET) is part of the Rectorate and reports to the Rector of ETH Zürich. LET promotes excellence and advances in teaching at ETH, offering information and services, and showcasing best teaching practice at ETH Zurich.
