Standing on the shoulders of a giant: the Turing Centre Zurich today inaugurates its teaching and research activities with this homage to the pioneering English computer scientist Alan Turing (1912-1954). As part of the Centre's first research seminar, external pageDavid Harel, Vice President of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Professor at the Weizmann Institute of Science, is giving a lecture this afternoon entitled "Standing on the Shoulders of a Giant: One Person's Experience of Turing's Impact."

After David Harel, the Turing Centre Zurich will welcome two more eminent researchers from the worlds of mathematics and theoretical computing: on 14 April 2016, external pageYuri Gurevich, Principal Researcher at Microsoft and Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan, and on 12 May 2016, external pageAvi Wigderson, Professor of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, who previously spoke at ETH as part of the 2012 Wolfgang Pauli lecture series.

The inaugural research seminar in 2016 kicks off the Turing Centre's discussion of fundamental issues in theoretical computing, mathematics, mathematical biology and physics. The Turing Centre at ETH Zurich is an interdisciplinary teaching and research institute for researchers and students from the natural, engineering and social sciences. Its members are drawn from ETH Zurich, the Collegium Helveticum and the University of Zurich.
