Renewing a residence permit (notification of expiration)

As a foreign employee, you need a residence permit, which has to be renewed each time before it expires. You will receive a “Notification of expiration” form for this purpose from the relevant District Office in the City of Zurich or from the Residents’ Registration Office (Einwohnerkontrolle) for your place of residence. The next stage in the process depends on your nationality:

For citizens of EU-27 and EFTA states

To renew your residence permit, you must report in person to the relevant District Office in the City of Zurich or the Residents’ Registration Office for your place of residence. You will need to bring the following documents with you:

  • The “Notification of expiration” form provided (no confirmation from your employer required)
  • Your current residence permit
  • A valid passport or identity card
  • Your current employment contract

For citizens of other states

You need to obtain confirmation from your employer on the “Notification of expiration” form. HR Operations will be happy to provide you with this. Please send us the form or come and see us in person.

Please note that a residence permit can only be renewed if your employment contract with ETH Zurich is still valid or has been extended accordingly.

Requesting a replacement ETH card (Staff ID card)

The ETH card is issued to all ETH Zurich members and people who are closely associated with the university. It serves as a visual identity card, a library identity card and an electronic identity card.

If your card is faulty or you have lost it, please report this to the relevant card issuer.
