Among the focus areas for research in sustainability are natural resources and how to use them sparingly. Natural resources include, for example, waterways, raw materials, biodiversity and ecosystems. The research is looking at, on the one hand, waste and materials cycles, and, on the other, the opportunities and challenges associated with using natural resources.
Competence Centres and Initiatives
Competence Center Environment and Sustainability CCES
ETH Zurich is the leading house of the Competence Center Environment and Sustainability in the ETH domain. The Center promotes sustainability related projects and co-operational activities within the ETH domain, not only between the two Technical Universities ETH Zurich and ETH Lausanne but also between the four research institutions within the ETH domain: the Aquatic Research Institute (Eawag), the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL), the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) and the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa). The CCES specifically promotes interdisciplinary collaboration activities and places great value on the early recognition of potential environmental problems.
World Food System Center (WFSC)
The WFS Center was established in late 2011 to build on the expertise of the ETH Zurich to address the existing and emerging challenges at the nexus of global food and nutrition security, food production and processing and environmental, economic and social wellbeing. The Center brings the broad expertise of the ETH Zurich and eawag under one roof while forging new synergies and relationships with key external partners. Through this approach the Center forms a platform for interdisciplinary teams to collaborate on research, education and outreach activities in line with strategic focus areas.
