Structure of the ETH Zurich Research Commission
The ETH Zurich Research Commission (hereafter the Research Commission) is an official body of the ETH Zurich. It is also an official body of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) with well-defined SNSF-related duties.
Research Commission Members
Members of the Research Commission are appointed by the ETH Zurich Executive Board (Schulleitung) for an initial period of four years. Their terms on the Commission may be extended for an additional period of four years by the ETH Zurich Executive Board. Many fields of ETH research are represented by the twenty or so Research Commission Members. The President of the Research Commission guides the activities of the Commission and briefs the Vice-President for Research about the recommendations of the Research Commission. The Vice-President for Research makes the final decisions on ETH-internal grant applications based on recommendations of the Research Commission and financial considerations. The work of the Research Commission is aided by the Executive Secretary of the Research Commission and the Office of Research.
The Research Commission is divided into three discipline-oriented Subcommissions, each headed by a Subcommission President.
Research Commission Executive
The Executive of the Research Commission, which comprises the President of the Research Commission and the Presidents of the three Subcommissions, chooses the external and internal reviewers for ETH Research Grant applications. The Executive Secretary of the Research Commission, who attends meetings of the Executive of the Research Commission, is responsible for requesting the external reviews.
Duties of the Research Commission
The Research Commission provides advice on research-related matters to the Vice-President for Research and other members of the ETH Zurich Executive Board.
The Research Commission is also charged with assessing grant and fellowship applications submitted to the Commission or to the Vice-President of Research. Members of the Research Commission may not "promote" their respective disciplines.
ETH Research Grant Applications
The Research Commision reviews ETH research grant applications and provides funding recommendations to the Vice-President of Research.
