Re-entry to a Master's degree programme

Main content

What is a re-entry

A re-entry into a Master's degree programme takes place if a student who previously deregistered or was dematriculated from ETH Zurich enrols for a Master's degree programme at ETH Zurich again at a later time.

Typical examples of a re-entry

  • A student takes a gap year without being matriculated between completing an ETH Bachelor's degree and beginning a Master's degree programme.
  • After successful completion of an ETH Master's degree a student wants to begin a second Master's degree programme.
  • After exclusion from an ETH Master's degree programme a student wants to begin another Master's degree programme.
  • After voluntary deregistration from an ETH Master's degree programme a student wants to take up either the same or a different Master's degree programme at a later time.

The following are not covered by the term re-entry

  • A student begins a consecutive or specialised Master's degree programme immediately after completing an ETH Bachelor's degree. Please see the information sheet Übertritt vom Bachelor- ins Masterstudium (PDF, 455 KB) (in German) for details.
  • After voluntary deregistration from an ETH Master's degree programme a student immediately wants to take up a different Master's degree programme. This is a change of degree programme.

Application or registration

A re-entry requires either an application at the Admissions Office or a registration at the Registrar's Office. Whether or not the student was previously matriculated in the same Master's degree programme is not relevant for this distinction.

Students register for re-entry at the Registar's Office if

  • they hold an ETH Zurich Bachelor's degree, and
  • their Bachelor's degree is not older than four years at the time of registration, and
  • they want to register for a consecutive Master's degree programme to which admission is guaranteed according to the current edition of the programme regulations (same discipline as the Bachelor's degree or regulated transfer)

Students apply at the Admissions Office if

  • they do not hold an ETH Zurich Bachelor's degree (e.g. first degree awarded by another university, ETH Diplom, ETH Master's degree etc.), or
  • their ETH Bachelor's degree is older than four years at the time of application, or
  • they want to enrol in a specialised Master's degree programme at ETH Zurich (regardless of any previous enrolment in the same programme), or
  • they hold an ETH Bachelor's degree and want to enrol in a consecutive Master's degree programme in a different discipline, and there is no guaranteed admission according to the current edition of the programme regulations (regardless of any previous enrolment in the same programme).

A complete application has to be submitted, and the usual deadlines apply.

Conditions and additional information

In addition to the general application instructions for Master's degree programmes please note the following:

  • Fee: A re-entry fee of CHF 50,- is charged instead of the application fee.
  • Re-entry into a previously started Master's degree programme: After deregistration there is usually no guarantee of readmission to the same Master's degree programme. When an application for re-entry is made, it will be checked if it still fulfils the admission prerequisites as set out in the current programme regulations. If the student is readmitted, any additional requirements may change.
  • Recognition of previous study achievements: There is no automatic credit transfer. After re-enrolment a request for recognition of previous study achievements can be submitted at the Admissions Office during the first four weeks after the start of the Master's degree programme.
  • Programme deadlines: If there was a previous matriculation at ETH Zurich in the same programme, the maximum number of semesters permitted for completing your studies will be reduced by the duration of the previous matriculation. A previous matriculation at ETH Zurich on a different level (e.g. Bachelor studies or 'Diplom-Studium') or in a different Master's degree programme does not affect the maximum duration of studies.
  • Exclusion: If you have been irrevocably excluded from a programme at ETH Zurich or any other Swiss or foreign university, the study programme selection at ETH Zurich is usually restricted.
  • Additional requirements in a consecutive Master's degree programme: If the relevant ETH Bachelor's degree is older than four years at the time of application, a student may be admitted with additional requirements to a consecutive Master's degree programme in the same discipline as the Bachelor's degree.
