Change of degree programme (Master)

Main content

What is a change of degree programme

A change of degree programme takes place if a student voluntarily deregisters from a Master’s degree programme prior to completion in order to immediately take up a different Master’s degree programme.

The following situations are NOT changes of programme but rather cases of re-entry:

  • After successful completion of one Master’s degree a student wants to begin a second Master’s degree programme.
  • After exclusion from a Master’s degree programme a student wants to begin another Master’s degree programme.
  • A student wants to begin a Master’s degree programme after having taken a gap year upon obtaining a Bachelor’s at ETH Zurich degree.

Application or registration

A change of programme requires either an application at the Admissions Office or a registration at the Registrar’s Office.

Keyboard navigation between tabs via Alt arrow keys as well as Home and End.

Students register for change of programme at the Registrar’s Office if

  • they hold an ETH Zurich Bachelor’s degree, and
  • their Bachelor’s degree is not older than four years at the time of registration, and
  • they want to register for a consecutive Master’s degree programme to which admission is guaranteed according to the current edition of the programme regulations (same discipline as the Bachelor’s degree or regulated transfer)

Students apply at the Admissions Office if

  • they do not hold an ETH Zurich Bachelor’s degree (e.g. first degree awarded by another university, ETH Diplom, ETH Master’s degree etc.), or
  • their ETH Bachelor’s degree is older than four years at the time of application, or
  • they want to enrol in a specialised Master’s degree programme at ETH Zurich, or
  • they hold an ETH Bachelor’s degree and want to enrol in a consecutive Master’s degree programme in a different discipline, and there is no guaranteed admission according to the current edition of the programme regulations, or
  • their admission to an ETH Master’s degree programme is restricted to certain majors/specialisations and they want to change to a different major/specialisation to which they have not previously been admitted within the same Master’s degree programme (change of major).

A complete application has to be submitted, and the usual deadlines apply.
