Application

The following information is applicable to the autumn semester 2017 and spring semester 2018 intakes. Updated information regarding applications for the autumn semester 2018 will be published here until October 2017.

Application materials become the property of ETH Zurich and cannot be returned.

The documents required for your application depend on your Bachelor's degree and on which Master's degree programme you apply to.

1. Required documents depending on your Bachelor's degree

Graduates of foreign (non-Swiss) universities

  • A signed printout of your application form
  • A copy of your matriculation certificate (e.g. Abitur, GCE, High School Diploma, Diploma of Secondary Education) that conforms to the specified standards
  • From each university attended: an offical transcript(s) that conform(s) to the specified standards, including exchange programmes and programmes you did not complete; double degree programmes: transcripts from both universities
  • For completed programmes: a certified copy of your academic degree(s) (e.g. Bachelor Diploma)
    that conform(s) to the specified standards
  • For programmes still in progress: an enrolment confirmation by your home university stating the duration of study and the title of the expected degree (title in the original language)
  • If available at your university: A certified copy of your diploma supplement(s) that conform(s) to the specified standards (usually issued in Bologna countries after degree completion)
  • If required: Language certificate/s (must be handed in before lectures commence)
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) with a complete list of schools and universities attended since secondary school, and without any biographical gaps
  • A copy of your passport (only the page containing the photo, names and date of birth) or your national identity card (copy of front and reverse sides)
  • Evidence of payment (in case of electronic banking: payment order effected) if you are not paying the application fee of CHF 150 online by credit card.

Graduates of Swiss Universities of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschulen)

  • A signed printout of your application form
  • A copy of your matriculation certificate (e.g. Berufsmatura) that conforms to the specified standards
  • From each university attended: an offical transcript(s) that conform(s) to the specified standards, including exchange programmes and programmes you did not complete; double degree programmes: transcripts from both universities
  • For completed programmes: a certified copy of your academic degree(s) (e.g. Bachelor Diploma) that conform(s) to the specified standards
  • For programmes still in progress: a confirmation by your home university that the degree can be awarded before the start of the chosen Master's degree programme
  • German certificate Level C1 or evidence for exemption (see language requirements)
  • If required: English certificate (must be handed in before lectures commence)
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) with a complete list of schools and universities attended since secondary school, and without any biographical gaps
  • A copy of your passport (only the page containing the photo, names and date of birth) or your national identity card (copy of front and reverse sides)
  • Evidence of payment (in case of electronic banking: payment order effected) if you are not paying the application fee of CHF 50 online by credit card.

Graduates of other Swiss universities

  • A signed printout of your application form
  • A copy of your matriculation certificate (e.g. Matura) that conforms to the specified standards
  • From each university attended: an offical transcript(s) that conform(s) to the specified standards, including exchange programmes and programmes you did not complete; double degree programmes: transcripts from both universities
  • If your degree has already been awarded: A certified copy of your academic degree(s) (e.g. Bachelor Diploma) that conforms to the specified standards
  • If required: Language certificate/s (must be handed in before lectures commence)
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) with a complete list of schools and universities attended since secondary school, and without any biographical gaps
  • A copy of your passport (only the page containing the photo, names and date of birth) or your national identity card (copy of front and reverse sides)
  • Evidence of payment (in case of electronic banking: payment order effected) if you are not paying the application fee of CHF 50 online by credit card.

Graduates of EPF Lausanne

  • A signed printout of your application form
  • A copy of your matriculation certificate (e.g. Maturité, Baccalauréat) that conforms to the specified standards
  • An EPFL-transcript(s) ('bulletin de notes') that conform(s) to the specified standards, with stamp and signature of the EPFL Service Académique including a list of the individual first year courses and their grades ('propé I')
  • If you attended other universities: an offical transcript(s) from each university that conform(s) to the specified standards, including exchange programmes and programmes you did not complete; double degree programmes: transcripts from both universities
  • If your degree has already been awarded: a certified copy of your academic degree(s) (e.g. Bachelor Diploma) that conform(s) to the specified standards
  • If required: Language certificate/s (must be handed in before lectures commence)
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) with a complete list of schools and universities attended since secondary school, and without any biographical gaps
  • A copy of your passport (only the page containing the photo, names and date of birth) or your national identity card (copy of front and reverse sides)
  • There is no application fee for candidates holding a Bachelor's degree from EPF Lausanne.

Simplified application: An application for a regulated transfer except for Mechanical Engineering MSc and Process Engineering MSc does not require the documents listed in section 2 below, apart from the language certificate. It is not necessary to provide course contents, textbooks or a motivation letter in the online form.

Normal application: An application for Mechanical Engineering MSc, Process Engineering MSc or a non-regulated transfer has to be complete with the entire online form filled out and  all the required documents provided.

Graduates and students of ETH Zurich

  • A signed printout of your application form
  • Up-to-date ETH-'Leistungsüberblick' of the current study programme, or simple copy of the degree's Academic Record ("Zeugnis") of a completed ETH programme, or simple copy of the Transcript of Records for Non-Graduating Students of an incomplete ETH programme
  • If you attended other universities: an offical transcript(s) from each university that conform(s) to the specified standards, including exchange programmes and programmes you did not complete; double degree programmes: transcripts from both universities
  • If required: Language certificate/s (must be handed in lectures commence) or evidence for exemption, e.g. Swiss matriculation certificate (schweizerische gymnasiale Matura)
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) with a complete list of schools and universities attended since secondary school, and without any biographical gaps
  • There is no application fee for candidates holding a Bachelor's degree from ETH Zurich (except for re-entry and change of degree programme).

Foreign-language documents

Transcripts and Diplomas always have to be submitted in their original language (normally the national or local language). In addition, a translation conforming to the specified standards is required for every document not originally written in English, German, French or Italian.

Direct Doctorate

If you are applying for the Direct Doctorate in Computer Science, submit a complete application for the Master's degree programme with the following alterations:

  • Use the following topic for your motivation letter in the online application form and write in English: "Your statement of purpose should concisely (in at most one page) explain your motivation and suitability to do doctoral studies in Computer Science at ETH. It should describe any past research and teaching experience, identify general areas of research and potential research groups you are interested in, as well as future career plans."
  • On first page of the printout of your application form, correct "Master's degree programme" to "Direct Doctorate" in handwriting (image (JPEG, 52 KB)).
