Finding research supervision

You yourself are responsible for finding a suitable research supervisor (professor).

Neither the Student Exchange Office nor the Doctoral Administration can help you with the search for a supervisory person for your application for a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship.

Contact with professor

Make direct contact with a professor and declare your interest in collaborating on a specific research project.

Tell the professor what you have studied so far and that you are applying for a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship.

All enquiries must be accompanied by the following documents, at a minimum:

Acceptance at ETH Zurich* after the award of a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship

* Administrative and other assistance (social, cultural) to scholarship holders at research institutions in the ETH domain (EAWAG, EMPA, PSI, WSL) is also provided by the ETH reception service for holders of Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships.

Please note, however, that the following information only applies in part to scholarship holders at research institutions. Please address queries to the ETH Zurich reception service.

Research scholarship after Master's degree

Status at ETH Zurich
(also applies to stays at EAWAG, EMPA, PSI, WSL)

FCS visiting student

 

Enrolled by the ETH Zurich Student Exchange Office as FCS visiting students

 

Prerequisite: Master's degree or equivalent qualification

Date of enrolment as an FCS visiting student 1 September of the calendar year
Tuition fees

Tuition fees are waived for FCS visiting students

 

However, the compulsory semester fees must still be paid regularly, see overview of fees

Augmentation of scholarship through additional paid work

Due to student status, only possible in the role of a student teaching assistant

 

During the semester students may work/be paid for a maximum of 15 hours per week

 

During the semester break students may work and earn full-time

 

The decision is made by the supervisor

Extension of scholarship No
Accommodation
  • Yes, guaranteed in one of the available student rooms
  • No accommodation for families
  • No accomodation provided for scholars at research institutions (possibly research institutions provide accomodation themselves)

Doctorate

Status at ETH Zurich

Doctoral student

 

Enrolled for the doctorate by the ETH Zurich Doctoral Administration

 

The applicant is responsible for registering for the doctorate immediately after being accepted for the FCS scholarship (ca. Mai/June), so that any admission requirements (examinations) are clear when the scholarship commences on 1 September of the given year.

Date of enrolment as a doctoral student 1 September of the calendar year
Tuition fees Tuition fees must be paid regularly
Augmentation of scholarship through additional paid work

Paid employment is possible up to the maximum allowed for ETH Zurich doctoral students

 

The decision is made by the supervisor

 

Administered by ETH Zurich Human Resources or the Human Resources of the respective research institution

Extension of scholarship A maximum of 36 months, at the request of the supervising professor
Accommodation
  • Yes, guaranteed in one of the available student rooms
  • No accommodation for families
  • No accommodation provided for scholars at research institutions (possibly research institutions provide accommodation themselves)  

Postdoctoral scholarship

Status at ETH Zurich

Usually Postdoctoral scholar

 

Administered by ETH Zurich Human Resources or the Human Resources of the respective research institution

Date of enrolment as a postdoctoral scholar 1 September of the calendar year
Tuition fees No tuition fees
Augmentation of scholarship through additional paid work

Paid employment is possible up to the maximum allowed for ETH Zurich postdoctoral scholars

 

The decision is made by the supervisor

Extension of scholarship No
Accommodation
  • No guarantee of accommodation in one of the available student rooms
  • No accommodation for families
  • No accommodation provided for scholars at research institutions (possibly research institutions provide accommodation themselves)
