MAS ETH in Future Transport Systems (MAS ETH FTS)

Topics: The focus of the interdisciplinary 'MAS ETH in Future Transport Systems' is the development and implementation of integrated and resource-friendly transport solutions and the associated transformation of present transport systems into sustainable systems for the future, contributing (for example) to realisation of the Swiss Energy Strategy 2050. The MAS programme is multimodal and addresses both goods and passenger transport and public and private transportation. It takes a systemic approach to solutions and methods for bringing about interdisciplinary and cross-sector cooperation, in the context of three areas:
A System aspects: Understanding the dynamics of complex transport systems and applying this expert knowledge for problem solving. Central drivers such as rapid digitisation, transport behaviour and efficiency
B Technology potential (software and hardware): Identifying and realising the potential for optimisation and innovation in future transport systems
C New business models: Development and implementation of company strategies and business models; Marketing of sustainable transport solutions
The programme covers science-based facts, models and methods from various disciplines from a practically oriented perspective and deploys them to address authentic current problems
Objectives: MAS programme graduates are able to develop and implement integrated, sustainable transport systems for the future. They can, for example
- Develop innovative, marketable products and services
- Develop and implement new business models
- Optimise existing transport services and systems with regard to economic, ecological and/or social aspects
- Contribute to the shaping of transformation processes, e.g. in organisations
Professional perspectives: MAS programme graduates can shape future transport systems because they have acquired the competences to assume more complex tasks and more responsibility, or to change from operative to strategic positions. They can also move sideways in the transport sector, and build professional networks involving both research and practice.
Potential employers: Enterprises connected with passenger and goods transport and private and public transportation, e.g. manufacturers, transportation services, consulting agencies, administration, and new IT and communications technology services outside the sector.
Programme structure: The MAS programme is modular and comprises three different CAS programmes in Future Transport Systems (each covering the respective module content), extended with an Integration module and a Master's thesis.
Total workload: 1500 hours involving ca. 64 classroom days in blocks of 3 to 5 days, distributed over 2 years
Students have a choice: They can either register directly for the MAS programme or complete one of the three CAS programmes and then expand it into an MAS programme.

Target group: Project managers and other management personnel, technical/strategic decision-makers in e.g. corporate development, product development, product management, and fleet management; consultants in the areas of transport and transportation; persons in related fields; and persons from other sectors.
Requirements: A Master’s degree recognised by ETH or the equivalent in a recognised discipline which are generally engineering, information and communication sciences, economic enginieering, natural sciences or geography and (generally) at least two years’ professional experience in the area of transport/transportation or a related field. For persons moving sideways into the field of transport/transportation: dependent on qualification a.o.
