MAS ETH in Architecture and Digital Fabrication (MAS ETH DFAB)

Type: Master Programme
Topics: The MAS Digital Fabrication teaches methods and technologies of digital design and fabrication and their expressed implementation in architecture and construction.
Projects and assignments enable students to develop design concepts and realise large scale prototypes with the unique robotic construction facilities of the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR). The programme describes and exemplifies how new technologies, materials, and processes contribute to an advanced and sustainable construction culture.
The MAS Digital Fabrication is the education platform for the NCCR Digital Fabrication. This large multidisciplinary research initiative provides an excellent environment for learning digital fabrication. Common events and research labs allow the NCCR researchers, investigators and the MAS programme to constantly exchange and interact.
Objectives: Participants will develop competence in complex design and production challenges and will be able to take leading positions in the field of architecture, construction, or the extended design and production industries.
Professional perspectives: Experience with advanced fabrication equipment, robotics, and design innovation technologies will position participants as cutting-edge practitioners in the field. The MAS programme in Digital Fabrication will have regular interactions with representatives from industry and practice, giving participants insight and a network to prepare them for practice.
Graduates will be capable of working in the following professions: architecture, construction, innovation, production management, and advanced academic research or teaching.
Programme structure: The MAS Digital Fabrication is a 1 year full-time programme and is structured as a series of teaching modules with an independent master thesis.
Lessons within the modules are given in the form of lectures, practical workshops, and projects as the main modus for developing skills. Learning will be supported through one on one mentoring in studio, group critiques, symposia, and excursions.
Target group: The MAS Digital Fabrication is targeted at university graduates from Switzerland and abroad. The MAS will accept qualified applicants who are specifically interested in improving their skills and experience of advanced digital design methods, digital fabrication, and the application of robotics within construction and architecture.
Requirements: A Master's degree in architecture or engineering acknowledged by ETH, or equivalent educational qualifications (i.e. a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years professional experience in a directly related field). Additional critical requirements are proof of creative design skills and technological capabilities. Qualification will be assessed from application documents and skills will be evaluated through portfolio review.
