2015 Annual Report published

ETH’s new 2015 annual report is here. Appearing for the first time in an expanded format, it offers a comprehensive overview of the events, achievements and developments that have shaped the past year at ETH.

Each year, ETH Zurich publicly discloses details of its performance and services rendered. This year, the annual report comes in a new format for the first time: a status report, which summarises the key events and developments at the university, and a detailed annual financial statement in line with the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS). The annual report is also now available in three languages: German, English and French.

Continuing growth

The annual report is clear evidence that ETH can look back on a successful year. The number of students has again risen slightly, with over 19,000 young men and women now studying at ETH Zurich. It is pleasing to see that the share of women starting at undergraduate level has increased to 32%.

In research too, ETH Zurich can look back on a great number of successes over the past year. Whether in health or environmental sciences, astronomy or quantum physics, researchers at ETH Zurich published a wide range of new findings in 2015. This once again highlights that collaboration with industry and society is an important instrument in driving research forward into pioneering areas; for example, donations from third parties enabled the university to build the Zurich Information Security and Privacy Center and the World Food System Center.

Conversely, ETH Zurich has itself also acted as an important instigator in industry: 25 new spin-off companies, nearly 100 patents and numerous collaborations with companies from a wide range of different sectors all go to show just how important ETH was to the local economy in 2015.

The university's growth can also be seen in its financial performance. ETH Zurich's operating revenue amounted to CHF 1712 million in 2015, an increase of 1% on the previous year. Around two thirds of this revenue originated from basic government funding, with the remainder coming from third parties. Operating expenses came to CHF 1605 million, or 2% higher than the previous year.
