Invention, patent, software license and commercialization
In addition to research and teaching, the remit of ETH Zurich also extends to the commercial exploitation of research results. The aim of such an exploitation is to maximise revenues for the Swiss economy and assure a flow of funds back to research.
An important aspect of the commercial exploitation is the protection of research results, for instance by applying for patents. Researchers are prompted to disclose their inventions to ETH transfer, the technology transfer office of ETH Zurich. The invention disclosure falls into three different catagories: Inventions (patents), Software (copyright), other intellectual property rights (e.g. trademarks).
