The Wüthrich Group - the senior group of the institute

The Wüthrich research group was initiated in the then „Institut für molekulare Biologie chemischer Richtung“ in 1969. Its research projects are in structural biology and protein research, with a specialization in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Experimental work by the Wüthrich group is currently pursued also at The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, CA, USA ( and at the iHuman Institute of ShanghaiTech University (, where details of the current projects are available.

Research in Zürich

The current research pursued in Zürich has been designed to extend and complement the structural biology data on prion proteins which we accumulated during the last two decades. In collaboration with Prof. Michele Parrinello, computational methods are used to expand the information on the conformational behavior of cellular prion proteins. In a project with Prof. Adriano Aguzzi, the physiological effects of previously observed variations of the conformational properties among different prion proteins are investigated with the use of transgenic mice.
