ETH members toasted the past year at the Executive Board's traditional Christmas Reception. In his speech, President Joël Mesot referred to various records that we as ETH have achieved in 2023.

The Association of Scientific Staff (AVETH) and ETH Diversity granted the Diversity Award for the third time. In a ceremony held in the main building of ETH Zurich, individuals and organizations that are committed to the principles of diversity and inclusion were honoured.

ETH Zurich members are invited to participate in the conference “AI For Energy & Sustainable Manufacturing” on 9 November 2023 at ETH Zurich. The full-day event will bring together researchers, innovators, industrial decision-makers and data scientists to meet and discuss.

Over 2,000 students, researchers, entrepreneurs and industry representatives discussed the latest trends in artificial intelligence at the AI+X Summit 2023. Popular topics included the influence of generative AI, AI legislation, AI in medicine and trustworthy AI.

This year, the Wolfgang Pauli Lectures will highlight the CRISPR technology, its origins and its current applications in research and medicine. The speaker is Jennifer Doudna, the 2020 Nobel Prize Laureate in Chemistry.

Over the last eight years, ETH Week has given over 1,200 students the chance to meet and network with experts from science, industry, and the public sector. In its place, PBLabs will enable project-based education (PBE) across the university.

The conference "Future Cities: Through Science. By Design. In Place. Over Time" brings together renowned experts from architecture, urban planning, politics, and society, including Momoyo Kaijima, Pierre de Meuron and Peter Sloterdijk. It takes place at ETH Zurich on 12 and 13 October 2023.

Scientifica is looking for helping hands on the weekend of 2 – 3 September. Anyone keen to be part of Switzerland’s largest science festival is very welcome to come along.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) calls for an inclusive education system – including at higher education level. At a panel discussion on 20 April, affected students, teaching staff and persons with expertise in the field of teaching talked about the possibilities and limitations of accessibility in education.

From 12 to 24 May 2023, the “Holdings of ETH Zurich Architectural Culture” exhibition will be on display in the main hall of the Main Building. In the free exhibition, visitors will be able to see some of the building components and furniture of ETH Zurich that are particularly worth protecting but that had to be removed from the university buildings due to construction work in the past.

Go and visit Morph Tales – Exploring Artificial Intelligence to experience in a smart and engaging way how AI and humans can accomplish tasks together. The new game will be unveiled on 1 April 2023 as part of the Informatiktage (Computer Science Days). It will then be available for play at the CAB building from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. until 14 April 2023.  

What are the opportunities and challenges of AI for our teaching?

In April and May, interested ETH members will have the chance to navigate the ETH campus in a wheelchair or with a white cane to gain a different perspective. This is one of the various events offered as part of the “Design for all” awareness campaign. ETH has now also published an accessibility statement.

The ETH Competence Center Rehabilitation Engineering and Science (RESC) is launching a new online lecture series. The first edition will start on 28 November 2022 featuring speaker Roger Gassert, Professor of Rehabilitation Engineering at ETH Zurich.

For the second time, AVETH is presenting the Diversity Award. It will honor an ETH scientific staff member who has contributed significantly to the advocation for diversity and inclusion at ETH Zurich. ETH members can now submit their nominees.

On 4 May, ETH Zurich is presenting the KITE Award to honour particularly innovative teaching projects and initiatives. In a short series, we present the three projects that made it to the final. All of them were created in the semesters of distance learning.

Numerous exhibitors will be at the Food4Thought fair in early April to present the diversity and deliciousness of sustainable food. You can visit the three-day event to learn more about vertical herb gardens, plant-based meat alternatives and sustainable gastronomy. The fair kicks off an awareness campaign orchestrated by ETH Zurich as part of the federal government’s Exemplary Energy and Climate initiative.

The exhibition and event programme “Together for the Sustainable Development Goals” is back – this time at ETH Hönggerberg and the Student Project House. From 7-18 March, 2022, the exhibition raises awareness for the 17 goals and highlights selected contributions from the ETH community.

We’re getting closer to the start of a major construction project at ETH Zurich’s Hönggerberg campus: the HPQ physics building. The digging of the foundations is scheduled to get underway in summer 2022, but preparations for the new building will soon be visible.

Our new programme of public tours is now online. Registrations for the Tuesday evening series of events are being taken for the first quarter of 2022.

As part of the recently launched Respect campaign, ETH members can attend a series of events on the subject of Respect. Deadline for registration is this Thursday, 4 November.

The 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) offer a global vision for a sustainable future. From 30 October to 13 November, an exhibition and several events raise awareness for the SDGs and highlight selected contributions from the ETH community.

“Put a full stop. When others don’t.” This slogan kicks off ETH Zurich’s new Respect campaign today. Following on from previous campaigns on this topic since 2004, Respect is once again at the top of the agenda for our university. This time the emphasis is slightly different: “Stand up for respect.”

Digitalisation is rapidly transforming our society. The fifth national Digital Day will highlight once again what this transformation means for the Swiss population and economy. As in past years, ETH Zurich is a partner of the event. Between 20 and 27 October, it will be presenting three projects that showcase digitalisation in a tangible way.

Write comprehensibly about research, present results compellingly and convey a confident image to the media: starting in November, ETH Zurich’s Corporate Communications will share knowledge about science communication through a series of courses and webinars.

ETH Zurich is evolving: the coming years will see not only the construction of new buildings, but also the transformation of interior space and office concepts. A townhall has been held to inform ETH members about architectural developments at ETH Zurich.

There have never been so many exhibition booths, lectures and other events as at the seventh edition of the Scientifica science festival. To allow researchers from ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich to exchange ideas with the public without any worries, the protection concept includes not only the COVID certificate but also a general requirement to wear face masks indoors.

Scientifica 2021 will take place on the weekend of 4 and 5 September. The range of this year's science festival by ETH and the University of Zurich is larger than ever before. This brings some challenges for the organisational team. Helping hands from the ETH community are still needed.

The last of our town hall series “Well-being in challenging times” focused on emotions and health. It was an occasion not to be missed: as well as presenting the results from the second survey on working from home, the event included an exciting update on the coronavirus situation.  

Anne Lacaton, Emeritus Professor of Architecture and Design at ETH Zurich, and her partner Jean-​Philippe Vassal have won this year’s Pritzker Prize, which is regarded as the Nobel Prize of the architecture world. On 19 May 2021, ETH Zurich marks this special occasion with a virtual event.  

The ETH LunchLottery has been growing in popularity over the past three months. Now the LunchLottery drawing will be held once per month instead of every two weeks. This gives the three participants more time to find a meeting slot that works for everyone.

For 50 years now, the ETH Zurich Staff Commission (PeKo) has championed the concerns of the administrative and technical staff. The milestone for co-determination at our university was laid in 1971, and is as important today as ever. Here we take a look back – and a look forward.

Every two years, the ETH Zurich community comes together and takes part in the “together” staff party. Last year's event was shifted to this summer due to the coronavirus pandemic. Unfortunately, the decision has been taken to postpone the event yet another year. The next edition of “together” is now scheduled to take place in August 2022.

In August, WSL Director and ETH Professor Koni Steffen had a fatal accident during field work in Greenland. Next Friday, the WSL will now hold a virtual memorial service for the climate researcher.

While this year’s ETH Day on Saturday, 21 November will have to take place with almost no guests, the approximately one-hour Academic Celebration will be broadcast live from the Semper Aula.

The action starts this afternoon! Follow the Cybathlon 2020 Global Edition live on the Cybathlon website from 4 p.m. onwards. Today and tomorrow, a riveting programme will feature footage of the races of more than 50 teams from across the globe, as well as special reports and interviews with experts.

The new ETH AI Center will officially open its doors on 20 October 2020. It has been headed by Executive Director Alexander Ilic since 1 October. What motivated the co-founder of ETH spin-off Dacuda and holder of two Entrepreneur of the Year awards to return to ETH Zurich?

VIScon Digital is set to take place in ETH’s main building from 5 to 10 October, and will be streamed online. All ETH employees are invited to attend. The talks, presentations and events will offer insights into current trends in and around the field of computer science, including developments relating to the coronavirus pandemic.

For 27 years, Wolfram Uhlig and his assistants have delighted their audience with barking "Chemical Dogs", flash fires of burning oil, and meter-high fountains of beer foam. Uhlig combined entertaining experiments with theoretical background in his shows. Now, he retires.

In a week’s time, the Executive Board of ETH Zurich will set out the plan for the university’s phasing out of emergency operations and will hold a townhall meeting to explain the details.

Until 26 March 2020, an exhibition at the Campus Info on the Hönggerberg campus will show how the excellent anergy grid works.

ETH Zurich has launched a university-wide project to reduce CO₂ emissions from business air travel. At an event held by the university, more than 200 participants discussed the ways in which individuals and ETH as a whole can change their behaviour.

In the third week of January, Prof. Ulrich Weidmann, Vice-President for Human Resources and Infrastructure, and Daniel Bucheli, Director of the Real Estate Management Department, informed ETH members about the structural development of ETH Zurich.

Forty-nine young professionals have passed their final apprenticeship exams. As part of the 2019 apprentice graduation ceremony, they celebrated completing their vocational training at ETH Zurich on Thursday.

ETH Zurich has received the SAP Innovation Award 2018 for its “refine” IT project.

For the fourth time, the “Oberstrass Määrt” was an ideal forum for interacting with the local community. ETH engaged in a particularly lively exchange with visitors to the university stand.

On Friday, 15 March 2019, Joël Mesot and Sarah Springman, together with the other members of the Executive Board, held an information session for ETH employees in which they answered questions on the planned leadership measures.

More than 2,000 ETH members attended the ETH Executive Board’s Christmas drinks reception this year. The event focused on the end of Lino Guzzella’s term as President of ETH Zurich.

The Executive Board has approved the function description of the departmental delegates for good scientific practice and has also decided to develop online communication channels step by step, to award a prize for young innovators to mark the 200th birthday of Alfred Escher in 2019, and to put childcare on a new footing.

At the start of August, Alessio Figalli was awarded the Fields Medal. This distinction is often referred to as the Nobel Prize for mathematicians and is a cause for major celebration. ETH Zurich is to mark this special occasion with a honorary lecture on 22 October 2018. The lecture will also be broadcast via live streaming.

Every two years, the ETH community meets at the "togETHer" staff party. Last Friday it happened again. More than 3500 employees and relatives defied the rain and enjoyed the cosy get-together in the oversized ETH-WG on the Hönggerberg. The highlights in pictures.

On Saturday, 9 June 2018, ETH took the opportunity to engage in a direct exchange with residents of the Oberstrass district for the third time. The area’s institutions, organisations and companies introduced themselves at the Oberstrass Määrt, a neighbourhood fair.

ETH Zurich is working on the further development of its main locations – Zurich Zentrum and Zurich Hönggerberg. This will enable it to accommodate the expected increase in students and researchers and to create the space required to explore new areas of research and innovative teaching methods.

An info room in the former anatomy building at University Hospital Zurich provides information on developments in Zurich’s central university district. There is also a poster exhibition in ETH’s main building that discusses what will happen to the urban space between the buildings.

Around 1,200 ETH members responded to the Executive Board’s invitation to this year’s Christmas reception. After looking back at some of the year’s highlights and getting a preview of the ETH plus initiative, the newly-launched ALEA Award was presented.

The federal pension provider PUBLICA is adjusting the technical interest rate and the conversion rate downwards. Thanks to provisions agreed earlier, pension reductions for ETH employees will largely be avoided.

On Monday evening, ETH Vice President Ulrich Weidmann, ETH Real Estate Director Daniel Bucheli and project delegate for the university district Peter Bodmer invited the local districts to a “Dialogue with ETH”. They discussed the state of the various plans in the central district and ETH Zurich’s current building and renovation projects.

What is the nature and meaning of numbers? Mathematician Richard Dedekind asked these questions 159 years ago at ETH Zurich, and became the first person to define real numbers. To mark this occasion, the Israeli science historian Leo Corry will give a public lecture on the unity of Dedekind’s number theoretic concepts.

AVETH, the association of scientific staff, has a new president: Martin Roszkowski. The doctoral student in neuroscience replaces physics doctoral student Arik Jung.

ETH’s campus in the centre of Zurich is closely connected to the Oberstrass district. For the second time, the Oberstrass District Association’s traditional Määrt-Fäscht festival offered the opportunity for members of the university to mingle with local residents.

The new HWW building on the Hönggerberg is brought to life not only by the students who live there, but also by the businesses who have made it their home. On the upcoming open day on 17 May, visitors can find out what's on offer.

The Network of Women in Computer Science is relaunching its name and logo. On Wednesday, 2nd of November, 5pm at CAB G51, all ETH members are invited to join.

The vaccination against the seasonal flu is carried out by the Safety, Security, Health and Environment (SSHE) administrative department in cooperation with AEH Centre for Occupational Health and Safety.

Last Wednesday evening 15 young researchers presented their projects at the Falling Walls Lab in Zurich. The winners were Etienne Jeoffroy (Empa), Denis Schapiro (UZH) and Joshua Urieli (ZHdK). They will all present their projects at the final in Berlin at the beginning of November. The lab is organised by ETH Zurich.

In September and October 2016 fire safety training is offered again. All interested ETH members are invited to register now.

The special exhibition on ‘Tambora and the year without summer’ will welcome 15 national and international researchers to present their latest results in a public lecture series. Lectures will be held in focusTerra every Thursday evening at 6 p.m. from 8 September to 15 December 2016.

The Congressi Stefano Franscini (CSF), ETH Zurich’s conference platform in the Canton of Ticino, has launched its call for proposals for 2018 academic conferences and 2017/2018 Winter Schools.

One idea, three minutes: that’s the challenge at the Falling Walls Lab ideas competition. The third Swiss qualifier will take place in September at ETH Zurich, with the winner earning a trip to the international final in Berlin.

Dieter Schorno has been Head of Vocational Education and Training for 18 years, and will be retiring at the end of June. Fabienne Jaquet took over his role on 1 June 2016.

In early June, Peter Widmayer led his last University Assembly meeting as president. As a token of appreciation for his services, the University Assembly presented the avid gardener with a fig tree.

At a public event of the Latsis Symposium 2016 at ETH Zurich on 29 June 2016, ETH members and the public will have the chance to discuss the opportunities and risks of personalised medicine with researchers from ETH and the University of Zurich.

ETH Zurich took part in the local festival in Zurich’s Oberstrass quarter. Researchers from the Cybathlon team presented two interesting experiments from health research and discussed their work with local residents.

An intensive German course enables ETH Zurich doctoral students to communicate in German within just one year. Registration for the course is open from 30 May to 14 July 2016.

The final decision on the winning proposal for the renovation of the MM building has now been made. The winning entry was “Lust am Wandeln” which impressed the jury with its precise execution, skilful embedding in the local landscape, and well-designed pedestrian flows.

In June 2016, the Competence Center Personalized Medicine UZH/ETZ and the IT'IS Foundation join forces to organize the Latsis Symposium ETH Zurich “Personalized medicine – challenges and opportunities”.

The second phase of Future Cities Laboratory started in September 2015 and will be officially launched at ETH Zurich on 20 April.

The Polymesse will take place in the ETH Zurich main building from 12 to 14 April 2016. The fair enables students to get in contact with many companies.

Three public lectures mark the inauguration of the Turing Centre Zurich's teaching and research activities.

On 27 April 2016 the KITE Award for “Key Innovation in Teaching at ETH” will be presented for the first time. KdL-President Felicitas Pauss has written a column about the significance of the new award in the latest issue of “life” magazine.

The Archives of Contemporary History (AfZ) are turning 50! In their anniversary year, the AfZ will be exhibiting 50 documents to show visitors their history since 1966.

The Manifesta art biennial will be hosted in Zurich this summer. ETH Zurich staff and students can order discounted event tickets in April.

What strategies and concepts can be applied to help provide high-quality, low-cost housing to meet future needs? This will be discussed in this year’s ETH Wohnforum – ETH CASE symposium on 14 April. Registration for the event is open now.

The Real Estate department will present its upcoming projects to ETH Zurich staff on 11 January. An accompanying exhibition will also present the concept for the future design of the Rämihof forecourt.

In order to keep up-to-date with the negotiations, plenary sessions and press conferences from the COP21 are being webcast live on the “Green Floor” in the CHN building (D-floor next to the lift), every day from 10am to 6pm.

The D-MAVT Distinguished Lecture Series brings world leading scientists and engineers to ETH Zurich. Next Monday, Ole Sigmund, Professor at the Technical University of Denmark, will talk about topology optimization.
