Matriculation

Last possible date

States the deadline for completing the designated degree programme.

Examinations must be taken at the latest in the examination session following the semester displayed (i.e. in the summer session for the Spring Semester and in the winter session for the Autumn Semester).

Students who do not meet the deadline to complete studies will be exmatriculated.

Section Programme

Confirmation of matriculation

This confirmation is available for download after enrolment for the semester. There are two options:

Standard and Extended (for external bodies such as the Immigration Office).

The confirmation of matriculation contains an electronic seal of ETH Zurich. This guarantees that the document was issued by ETH Zurich and that it has not been altered.

The electronic seal can be read in 2 ways:

For earlier semesters (up to and including the spring semester 2023), a confirmation of matriculation must still be ordered from the Webshop in the old format for a fee.

Enrolment

Students enrol at the start of each semester for the following semester.

First the personal address information is displayed so that you can check it and correct it if necessary.

Enrolment not possible

It is not possible to enrol if:

  • there are any reservations about the regular continuation of study (e.g. if a programme deadline cannot be met). A different page will appear instead.
  • students have unpaid reminders. Enrolment will not be possible until the invoice has been paid and booked.
  • students have not registered or applied for their Swiss OASI number by the start of the 2nd semester.

Enrolment for students of the University of Zurich

Students of the UZH who enrol for courses as auditors at ETH Zurich must authenticate themselves for every semester enrolment at their home university. Clicking on “Enrolment” calls up the Switch page, where the home university (not ETH Zurich) should be selected. Authentication should proceed with the login/password of the home university. Following successful authentication here, the enrolment process in myStudies will continue.

Qualifying examination

Doctoral students subject to a qualifying examination enter the appointed date in this function. The results of qualifying examinations may also be viewed here.

Tutor

A tutor is necessary if the degree programme requires a Learning Agreement.

Additional requirements

Contains all the information from the admission decision. If no additional requirements are stored in the database the button is not displayed;  in some cases, however, additional requirements may have been designated which are outside the system. Relevant is the admission decision.

Specialisation

The “Specialisation” function is displayed only for degree programmes in which specialisations can be pre-selected. “Specialisations” are majors, focus areas or minors.

Learning Agreement

A Learning Agreement is an individual agreement between the student and the tutor.  You can plan which courses you intend to take from the subject areas relevant to your degree programme. Your choice of courses may deviate from the courses proposed in the Course Catalogue. The Learning Agreement must be approved by the tutor, and in some degree programmes by the Study Administration.

Study overview

The study overview shows a list of all the course units for which students are enrolled within the degree programme, sorted by semester.

Degree request

As soon as sufficient credits have been acquired the degree request can be submitted here.

Master’s degree programme

Bachelor's students can enrol in a consecutive Master's degree programme. The "Master programme" button is displayed to Bachelor's students if the requirements for a transfer to a Master's degree programme are fulfilled.

Section Learning Units

Registration

Here you can register for the courses you wish to attend. This function only works if you have enrolled for the next semester.

Course units for which you have registered are displayed in the schedule. (Note: See the special comments on the page explaining the schedule).

As a rule attending a course without registering for it is not permitted.

If you tick the box "Without structural information" under "Search result", course units will be listed only once and without programme information. Programme information for course units can be obtained under "Offered in".

Research papers/projects/theses

Research papers/projects/theses are in a special course unit category which is more narrowly defined in the programme regulations which govern them. Since Autumn Semester 2015 they have no longer been registered for under "Course registrations", but have had their own menu entry. Research papers/projects/theses are processed in a special way:

  • Details of the research paper/project/thesis must be drawn up, in particular listing its start and end dates and its title. A project outline may be uploaded in PDF form.
  • A supervisor must be designated. Students either select this person from a list, or the choice is pre-defined.
  • Research papers/projects/theses are viewable throughout the duration of studies. As soon as a performance assessment is undertaken the research paper/project/thesis will also appear in the transcript of records.
  • Prerequisites may apply before the student is allowed to start the research paper/project/thesis. These might involve a minimum number of acquired credits, a selection of subjects to be passed, or compatibility with a Learning Agreement.
  • Additional prerequisites may be listed, which students must confirm.
  • Confirmations from the supervisor, tutor or Study Administration Office may be required. As soon as all confirmations have been issued, the paper/project/thesis is definitively registered.
  • Reminder emails before the submission deadline: If the research paper/project/thesis has not yet been submitted, students will receive a reminder email 2 weeks before and the day prior to the submission deadline.
