Objective

The learning objectives describe in detail the competences to be acquired by the students during the course unit. Information on formulating learning objectives can be accessed on the site Designing teaching of Educational Development and Technology (LET).

Abstract

The abstract is printed in the diploma supplement. It is a short description of the course content and the objective.

Competencies

At least one competency must be selected.

Content

What are the content and topics of the course unit?

Lecture notes

Details on course handouts can be entered in the field «Lecture notes».

Literature

Literature references that are useful for course preparation or as complementary reading can be entered in the field «Literature».

Prerequisites / Notice

The field «Prerequisites / Notice» can be used to enter details on deadlines, number of participants, etc., but particularly the requirements for the course attendance.

In order to make students aware of the competencies they can develop at ETH, lecturers must specify which competencies students can develop in their courses according to the ETH Competence Framework.

  • Not fostered - No learning activity supporting the development of this competency. The competency is not listed in the Course Catalogue (default option).
  • Fostered - Students engage in a learning activity that is not part of the performance assessment but still supports the development of this competency (for example, through exercises or in practice).
  • Assessed - Students engage in a learning activity that supports the development of this competency, which is part of the performance assessment (grade or pass/fail).

Please consider the core deliverables of your course.

  • Select at least one competency as “fostered” or “assessed” and aim to focus on the main 3-5 competencies fostered by the teaching format, the course’s material and learning objectives
  • Do not select every single possible competency. Over-representing competencies may create wrong expectations about your course

Detailed information can be found in the overview of the ETH Competence Framework.
