zukunftsstadt

Cities are cultural centres and the driving force behind the local and global economy. However, in their present form they are not sustainable, from either an ecological, social or economic point of view. Pollution, rising temperatures, a lack of resources and criminality all pose a threat to urban quality of life. Cities also make a major contribution towards global warming.

The ETH Future Cities Laboratory is concerned with the development of new cities and the transformation of existing ones, with the greatest challenges lying in parts of the world such as Asia and Africa. This is why ETH Zurich, together with local partners, has set up a research centre for global sustainability in Singapore. ETH has also helped to set up an Institute for Urban Development at the university in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

Researchers regard cities as dynamic systems through which resources, energy and people flow. These flows are studied at three levels – building technology, urban planning and spatial planning – with a view to finding out how they can be controlled in the interests of sustainability. In their work, the researchers sometimes use real construction projects as laboratories for new developments. This enables them to put innovations directly into practical use.

The following Centres of Competence and interdisciplinary scientific centres of ETH Zurich are conducting research in the area of cities & development:

Future Cities Laboratory (FCL)
The Future Cities Laboratory is the first research programme in the Singapore ETH Centre (SEC). It is a new laboratory for sustainable urban development. This first SEC research programme is scheduled for five years and started in September 2010.

Network City and Landscape (NSL)
Through research and teaching, Network City and Landscape (NSL) lays the foundations for a design of an environment that meets human needs, is sustainable, and has high aesthetic and cultural quality, and it makes this design available to the public.

ETH Global
Since August 2012, ETH Global brings together the former North-South Centre and International Institutional Affairs into one entity. With this, the competences required for a successful internationalisation, bilateral research programmes as well as teaching and research alliances will be united within one team, including research collaboration and capacity development in international development and cooperation.

The following departments of ETH Zurich are actively conducting research in the area of cities & development:

Architecture (D-ARCH)

The Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta) aims at the testification to the historical dimension of architecture and the provision of a platform for its discussion in the contemporary world.
More
The Institute of Urban Design develops and imparts knowledge of new principles and methods of urban design.
More
The institute's two professorships focus on topological methods in landscape design, new media in landscape analysis and perception, recent history and theory of landscape design as well as the development and transformation of complex areas.

ETH Studio Basel researches on processes of transformation in the urban domain on an international scale, focusing on the urbanization process on the seven Canary Islands, the development of the tri-national region of MetroBasel, and cities such as Belgrade, Havana, Nairobi, Casablanca, or Hong Kong.
More (partly in German)

Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (D-BAUG)

The institute aims at the development of integrated utilization concepts for land use and operation, as well as the development of planning measures and practical implementation processes.
More
The Institute for Transport Planning and Systems addresses education, research and consulting in the area of transport planning and its relations to spatial planning, environment, society and economy of transport engineering, especially the development and operation of traffic facilities.
More

Mechanical and Process Engineering(D-MAVT)

The IDSC pursues a model-based approach to the optimization and the control of mechatronic, thermal, aerospace, biological and economic systems. The focus of the research projects lies on control and optimization of road vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles, thermal energy conversion systems, capital investments, and biological systems.
