Research Data at ETH Zurich

Introduction

Good data management is an important aspect of the research process in all scientific disciplines. Within the framework of Open Science in general, and Open Research Data in particular, the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) mandated swissuniversities in collaboration with partners to realize the Swiss National Open Research Data (ORD) Strategy, which complements the existing Swiss National Strategy on Open Access.

The topic of research data management has become more and more a priority for funders, journals as well as academic institutions. For example, both the external pageSwiss National Science Foundation and external pageHorizon Europe require data management plans for projects they fund. Such plans must be submitted at the start of the research project and should be updated throughout. The Guidelines for Research Data Management at ETH Zurich (RDM Guidelines, RSETHZ 414.2) govern institutional requirements that should strengthen good scientific practice among ETH researchers and enhance robustness and reproducibility of research output produced at ETH Zurich.

Proper data management is a key prerequisite for effective data sharing and publishing, which in turn increases the visibility of one’s scholarly work and thus is likely to increase citation rates. By managing one's data, even if a funding body does not call for it, the research funds can be used optimally by avoiding unnecessary duplicate work and by streamlining the work process.
