A New Understanding of Life

Over the last few decades, biology has developed its natural history approach into that of an experimentally focused discipline. Its goal is the elucidation of structure, function and interactions of macromolecules, as well as understanding entire molecular networks and cell interactions. In daily work, the latest methods and technologies are applied.

Educational objective:

Today the study of biology ranges over an enormously wide area of expertise. Following solid basic training in the Bachelor’s degree programme, students may progress to one of the nine specialisations in a Master’s degree programme and familiarise themselves with working and research methods. Here the emphasis is experimental laboratory work, which increasingly determines working methods in both education and career. About 2/3 of the graduates continue their education with a doctorate.

Career profile:

Employment opportunities for Master’s degree holders include a broad spectrum of occupations. The focus of the job opportunities is on research positions at universities and in private industry, secondary school teaching, but also applied professions in fields such as medicine, pharmacy, agriculture, environmental protection and other areas are very popular. Biologists thus in practice collaborate with an interdisciplinary array of specialists.
