Collection of Prints and Drawings
On Thursday, 29 November, Susan Dackerman (Harvard University) shows the importance of printing in the 16th Century for the dissemination of knowledge taking Albrecht Dürer's printed work as an example.
The lecture will examine the participation of printmakers in the scientific inquiries of the sixteenth century, and the role prints played in the production and dissemination of knowledge. Specifically, it will survey the modes of knowledge exchange and transmission made possible by printmaking, using the example of Albrecht Dürer and his scientific contemporaries. Dürer’s printed works served as informational currency between the artistic and scientific communities, inspiring new directions in scientific production, especially within the fields of cosmology and natural history.
With Susan Dackerman, Carl A. Weyerhaeuser Curator of Prints, Harvard Institute of Art.
