On Thursday, 9 February, guest speaker Professor Dr. Nina Fedoroff, President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, will speak about feeding a world population of 9 billion people.
Prof. Fedoroff has conducted fundamental research in the molecular biology of plant genes and transposable elements, as well as on the mechanisms plants use to adapt to stressful environments. Long aware of the impact of science on society, she authored a 2004 book, Mendel in the Kitchen: A Scientist’s View of Genetically Modified Foods, which examines the scientific and societal issues surrounding the introduction of genetically modified crops.
Professor Fedoroff is an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the European Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Microbiology. In addition to her many other accolades she was named a National Medal of Science laureate in 2006, the United States of America highest award for scientific achievement. She received the American Association of Plant Biology (ASPB) Leadership in Science Public Service Award in 2010.
