ETH-Tag 2010: Impressions

On 20 November, ETH Zurich celebrated its 155th ETH Day (academic holiday) with guests from research, politics and industry. This ceremony concluded a successful
155th academic year in the history of the university.

ETH-Rector Heidi Wunderli-Allenspach explained how ETH Zurich used the budget autonomy for the dynamic development of the institution. The budget autonomy was assigned to ETH Zurich seven years ago, in connection with the revised ETH-Law. She also elaborated on the question about the admissions restriction concerning foreign applicants for Master programmes. Federal councilor Didier Burkhalter gave the ceremonial address. The academic ceremony was accompanied musically by the Academic Orchestra. After the ceremony the guests were invited to exchange views during the banquet.

ETH Zurich’s Rector awarded honorary doctorates to seven research personalities, whereof the two “inventors” of quantum cryptography, Professors Charles H. Bennet (USA) and Gilles Brassard (Canada), as well as the designer of the “laminar flamelet”-concept, Professor Norbert Peters (Germany). Further honorary doctorates were bestowed on Professor Marinus C.M. van Loosdrecht (Netherlands) for resource-saving waste water treatment technologies, Professor Helmut Schwarz (Germany) for establishing the organometallic chemistry in the gas phase, Professor Jean Zinn-Justin (France) for new applications in the renormalization group theory and Professor Jinghai Li (People’s Republic of China) for groundbreaking contributions to multi-scale modelling.
