This year's ETH Day was dedicated to the 150th anniversary slogan "Welcome Tomorrow". The ETH Day closed the ETH Visions week and at the same time concluded the events for the anniversary celebration. Between 14 and 18 November, ETH brought together over 1000 guests from politics, economics, science, and culture who reflected on the future of ETH Zurich and the future of Switzerland as a teaching and research centre. The results of these creative dialogues will influence the daily routine at ETH Zurich. The new president of ETH Zurich, Prof. Ernst Hafen, who will start his term on 1 December 2005, will support its integration. He was involved in this final event, along with departing president Olaf Kübler and other personalities, in forging the concluding ideas and reflections.
ETH Visions was the last event of the ETH Zurich anniversary year. It followed on the huge success of the two events with public appeal "ETH for all" and "ETH on the road". In spring, nearly 250,000 people visited the exhibition "Welten des Wissens" ("Worlds of Knowledge") at the Swiss National Museum in Zurich and the "Science Truck" made a visit to eleven large grammar schools in all four parts of the country. The unconventional programme of short lectures in public places entitled "150 Professors in discussion" showed how stimulating and enriching interactions between the public and the science community can be. Spurred on by this success, ETH Zurich will continue these events next year in a new form and in future create even more room for dialogue between ETH Zurich and the public.
