Formula E: mobility debate at ETH Zurich

As part of the first Formula E race in Switzerland, researchers and representatives from industry and politics will come to ETH Zurich to discuss future solutions for intelligent and sustainable mobility.

The Julius Baer Zurich E-Prix 2018 – the first race in Switzerland for electric-powered cars – will take place on 10 June. Today at ETH Zurich the organisers presented members of the media with more details about the event, with Zurich Mayor Corine Mauch and ETH President Lino Guzzella in attendance. The ETH main building also served as the finish line for a demonstration run, as Swiss Formula E driver Sébastien Buemi drove a Formula E racing car through Zurich with a police escort.

ETH Zurich will participate in the race’s official accompanying programme, eDays. The Formula E race in Zurich is not only a sporting competition, it is also an opportunity to think about the mobility of the future, Guzzella said to the media. The university considers climate-friendly, energy-efficient and affordable mobility to be a key topic for research and education.

Visions and concrete projects

At the eDays symposium on Friday, 8 June, ETH Zurich will place the topic of e-mobility in a wider context. The debate will include experts from science, industry and politics, including ETH professors Konstantinos Boulouchos, Christopher Onder and Gerhard Schmitt.

ETH students will also present their own mobility projects. These include Duckietown, a system of autonomous mini-cars that visitors can get actively involved with; the autonomous electric racing cars from AMZ, the academic motorsports club; and the Swissloop high-speed travel capsule that will take part in Elon Musk’s Hyperloop competition in Los Angeles this summer.
