Entrance and admission for doctorate

If you hold a recognised Master degree and your qualifications meet the prerequisites, you can apply to start a doctorate at ETH Zurich provided you have found an ETH professor willing to accept you as a doctoral candidate.

As a rule, doctoral students are employed as research assistants. Please note that the application for doctoral studies and drawing up your employment contract are two different processes involving two different sets of documents, one being sent to your supervisor’s institute and the other to ETH Doctoral Administration. The registration form for doctoral studies and the required documents must be submitted to the Doctoral Administration at the same time as the documents for your employment are being forwarded by your supervisor’s institute to Human Resources. For international applicants, the processing time can take 4-10 weeks.
